Two Deputies Wounded In Shotgun Attack
Two Grant County Sheriff's deputies were shot with a shotgun by a man lying in wait after responding to a domestic disturbance call in rural eastern Oregon.
A third deputy returned fire and killed the alleged shooter, 39-year-old Eric R. Brazelton.
The deputies were inside a house late Saturday and had called for an ambulance for a small child.
When the ambulance arrived, Brazelton, who was hiding outside the residence, opened fire with a shotgun, officials say.
Deputy Jason Rehling was shot in the face. He was transported by Lifeflight Helicopter to Saint Charles Medical Center in Bend and then transferred to Portland's Oregon Health Sciences University, where he is listed in critical condition.
His father, Dan Rehling, said doctors expect Rehling to make a complete recovery although he will need plastic surgery on his face. Rehling had been with the Grant County Sheriffs Office just four months.
"I'm still in shock," Dan Rehling told KGW television news. "There's still a disbelief as to what's happened. There's no amount of training that could have prevented this."
A second deputy, Richard Gray, was shot in the upper back and neck. Gray was treated and released from a hospital in John Day.
A third deputy who was not wounded and who has not yet been identified returned fire and killed the suspect. Oregon State Police are investigating.
