This has been the worst summer for bear maulings in the municipality since 2008, when three people were injured by brown bears in Anchorage and Eagle River and another person was swatted by a black bear in Eagle River. Previously this summer two people were mauled, one in Eagle River and one near Bird Creek.

The summer has also proven deadly for at least four young brown bears in the Anchorage area. Two of the bears were shot by wildlife authorities after exhibiting a pattern of behavior that was likely to result in human injuries. The other two brown bears, including one which escaped from the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center in Portage, were shot in defense of life or property.

It is only mid-June and the Anchorage area is getting into it's worst season ever with months to go of more possible bear attacks. With two DLP's and three attacks so far, one has to wonder why we haven't had a single save from pepper spray, but we have had two saves from firearms.

I continue to be skeptical about just exactly how good pepper spray vs guns really are. It is clear in the three attacks that they had neither pepper spray or guns. The days for just walking around in grizzly country without any protection at all is just not a good idea at all. If you like pepper spray, carry it. If you like guns carry them. But walking around in grizzly country counting on your good looks is not a winning combination.:banghead:

Something that should be noted, at least 2 of those bears were killed in pretty heavy residential neighborhoods, soo, yeah, you start shooting off...

SECONDLY
a number of attacks, like the the one in the linked story were not handled well, she shouldn't have turned and ran, that TRIGGERS the attack instinct, so in the woods, smarts wins out, and you gotta remember you ain't the baddest thing out there.

Any attack where all you have is your good looks is an attack not handled well. Yes, running is one of the worst things you can do. Going into the woods unprepared is just asking for trouble.

had a Grizz in camp last week near Ft Nelson BC, on June 11, beaned him with a .58 cal lead cast ball twice from my slingshot at 20 yards, he snorted and took off, lol

he had been around for a couple of days, showed no fear of humans,or warning gunshots ,

HE never came back after a bruising from the 2 x .58C cal lead balls,

.338WinMag on my shoulder for back up,,,,,, just in case, lol :banghead:

As far as running... Verrrrrry long and funny story very short. I found myself between a mother and cub, while holding fish at the waters edge and on a bog in failing light in Alaska once. Regardless of all the classes, seminars, briefings, warnings, advices and anecdotes I had heard up until then (lots and lots of them Army provided), I had to actually scream the words in my head "DON'T RUN" along with the other do's and don'ts swirling around in the adrenaline stream.

Knowing how hard it is to not run having been in the "worst case scenario" (outside of them having just come out of hibernation) I sympathize with those who go full rabbit in these situations. I don't agree, just "get" it.

my name isnt David , and the bear's name wasnt "Goliath", but I did have a Grizz tag and was hunting grizz, but I wanted the elusive Grizz in that local with the 9 inch front paws,,, HE wasn't so co-operative for getting a shot at him though, so no, dead grizz this year, season was over on the 15 of June

my daughter videoed the pesky Grizz getting lumps from my slingshot,
my hunting buddy a LEO informed me later he could arrest me under the " provisions of the mental health act",, but he said it would be pointless,,,:)

you hear about the guy that was out hiking by himself when he came upon a charging sow? i guess it bit the back of his neck and his helmet in his backpack and picked him up and shook him. all of a sudden he realized it was gone and he got up and saw it coming back so he scrambled 30' up and tree and called 911. i guess it took them 2 hrs to get to him but he is OK now. i wanna say that was by eagle river but i can't quite remember.

I'm out in the bush right now in the SE. ran into a couple blacks with cubs, they weren't too mad. i have seen quite a few moose kills along the logging roads out here and it sends a chill down my spine whenever i walk up and find huge patches of adult moose hair where it had been dragged down the road. i NEVER go out without my .375 with one in the tube, though i would be lucky to get one shot off at a charging sow. i think instead of everyone worrying about control round feed they should get ass extensions, because if you are at the point where you have to reload on your back it would just make it easier to kiss your ass goodbye.

i was in king salmon last october for our bear season and a local told me that they are going to issue "city tags" to residents down there. i love that place. never met nicer people.

This will go on forever till Chugach state park is opened to hunting[not drawing permits]. I live in East Anchorage on a dead end road that ends on Ft Rich property and am plagued with bears and moose. Instead of having them run over on the road, why not harvest them to a managable number?

sounds similar to the griz problem in yellowstone..

no hunting+human traffic=habituated bears

they need a healthy fear of humans..and lead. instead, they associate the smell of humans as a food source. I'm not saying they want to eat humans, but in yellowstone they know humans have food.

Here the city's reponse is to fine you if you do not put your trash in " bear proof " containers. No hunting allowed, but if someone's poodle gets et by a Wolf the militery sends out the green berets to thin out the wolf population. No hunting, kill predators hell of a game managment plan.

My Dad is in Fairbanks, but goes to Circle to spend most of the summer. He and my uncle were telling me that they had seen quite a bit more dangerous wildlife (bears & wolverines etc)around the cabin in the past two years. He said the garbage dumps were really dangerous this year.

Two of the bears were shot by wildlife authorities after exhibiting a pattern of behavior that was likely to result in human injuries.

and here i thought that profiling was wrong! ;)

Defense of Life or Property. All DLP's are investigated and ruled upon which is something that the folks in Alaska understand is coming after any self defense bear shooting.

And, after the done throughly exploring your colon and small intestine, and F&G has decided to rule, should you be found to have shot the animal not in DLP, they will take everything, you will be given a summons and face time, really not worth it to poach in Alaska,

Oh, you flew here, , hopped in your new truck and blew this here moose away... Ok, where are the keys, troopers will be by in a bit to pick up their new plane and truck. and they take EVERYTHING associated with the illegal act.

Crusty old guy sipping on the brown bottle not getting much luck, is F&G enjoying his A&W root beer as he's watching the violations rack up, and that's the truth, if they are nice, they warn it, if you are stupid or flagrant, they just haul you in.

alaska, that thing looks like an absolute toad! what'd he square? this one was 9' that we took down on the peninsula, along with a 10' and two 8.5's. picture doesn't do it much justice though, someone snapped it right before i got to skinnin. sorry for the off topic, brown bears get me flustered. :D

shadow, i have yet to be charged, or even false charged, but my boss tells me that you basically have to have bite or claw marks on your body for them to justify DLP.
