Two handed grip- cocking the hammer?

Maybe this is general knowledge to you all- so forgive me for asking if the answer is perfecly obvious.

I went to the range yesterday, and on this outing brought a Taurus Model 66 .357.

Now when I hold it with a two handed grip (I am right handed) I use the thumb on my right hand to cock the hammer when shooting SA. The guy at the range suggested that a better way was to use the thumb of my left hand so as not to disturb my grip after each shot.

Is that the way you all do it (trigger hand thumb to cock, or opposite thumb)? Is there a "right" and "wrong" way? Is it just a matter of preference ? Do you see pros/cons for either?

I am right handed.I can't say whether one method is the correct method. When shooting 44 magnum loads in single action mode the two handed approach with a left thumb cocking manoever is the only way for me. Without doubt the left thumb cock allows you to keep a stable and unchanging grip on the revolver with your right hand, which hopefully translates into better shot placement.

Using the "off hand" thumb in SA fire is faster, with practice, and as suggested it lets you keep your firing grip with the strong hand. It also allows you to pick up your sight picture more quickly between shots. While "right" or "wrong" ways do actually exist among the many shooting disciplines, this is one that is "better" if you choose to use it.

Personally, I never found a technique for cocking the hammer back to fire SA that I found comfy speedy. For precise shooting, I shoot SA, but for the most part, I taught myself to shoot DA because I just found it faster for most applications. IMHO, YMMV

I have been instructed to use the left thumb. I find I can control the weapon better when moving as in a CAS match (the only time I have a SA revolver).

Do not know if there is a "correct" method or not. Just don't throw it over your shoulder when cocking like "they do on the tee vee."

there is a correct way:

when shooting bullseye (one-handed) - cock with strong hand
when shooting traditional CAS - cock with strong hand
when shooting CAS - cock with off hand (maintaining consistent shooting grip)
when shooting for selfdefense/combat - use the durn DA..unless you're using a SAA

I generally use off hand to cock the hammer as it makes for a more consistent hold and certainly better control and groups. Just fooling around as with my Vaqueros or playing cowboy I sometimes shoot the first round by cocking with the strong hand but all follow ups are cocked with the off hand.

I grew up with Roy Rogers, Gene Autry and John Wayne. I use the right (strong side) thumb for cocking in SA mode for target shooting. For defensive practice, I use the DA mode.

I use the left (weak hand) thumb for cocking be cause it allows for a more consistent (unchanging) grip with the strong hand. Quantrill

I use my left hand (weak) to cock the hammer. I wasn't taught this way, it just felt "right". Not breaking your grip is a plus in my opinion. I do need to practice shooting in DA a little more though.
