I just got two boxes from boxes from the CMP.

261XXXX from Feb. of 44, Barrel from 5-44, Walnut matched stock set, no markings on stock, really dinged up and a chunk missing from wood. Wood is very smooth from use. I can't open the action with my hand, I have to tap the butt on the floor. Is this something that a good cleaning and grease will fix?

300XXXX from July of 44, Barrel from 11-44, Beech stock with mismatched walnut upper, only two dings in the stock. The stock is in a rough factory finish and the beech has not started to turn red.

Question - What are the parts that are important to find dates on? Is there a good guide on the web on this?

I really wanted a USGI WWII rifle so I ordered two SA FG's to hedge my bet's. I'm only going to keep one, I'll sell the other and order a greek service grade to shoot. I want a good looking rifle but I also don't want a boyds stock unless they sell one that is not over sized. Is there a source for surplus walnut stocks in better condition than mine?

Has anyone had any success matching the non walnut stock to walnut hand-guards?

What is the cheapest Muzzle / Throat gauge I can get?

Vote on which one I should keep, I'll post pics later.
