1- I just ordered these nipples, TC stainless 1/4 28 thread, for my TC Hawken .45cal. They're supposed to be standard for #11 caps. Then I find they don't fit because the threaded part of the nipple is bigger than the threaded hole in the barrel. What's the deal? Did they change the size for the newer rifles?

2- I was watching Pale Rider a couple of weeks ago and saw Clint was using a 1858 Remington converted to metalic cartridge. Does anybody make this version or modify a blackpowder revolver to this configuration?

I have a '58 Pietta reproduction with an R&D cartridge conversion cylinder (.45 Colt) from midwayusa.com. It is a great shooter and with the target sights is very accurate.

rlltdjpr, I've seen the cylinder you're talking about and noticed Midway has, for a '58, one for Pietta and one for Uberti. I also noticed the gated cylinders for the Colt clones. IIRC, the '58 Clint was using was modified with a firing pin solid on the hammer- maybe the hammer was off a 1875 Remington or "made special by a frontier gunsmith" as many were during the transition from cap&ball to cartridge- and the cylinder was bored through (no back peice with individual firing pins as with the R&D conversion cylinder).

I also noticed a Colt's Navy .36 modified- cylinder bored through probably for .38LC and gated, but no ejector rod- when watching the first few minutes of The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. I'm thinking Clint had a tendancy to wind up using odd stuff, but not improbable stuff.

1) You may have ordered the first size over accidently or they shipped the first size over by mistake. Check the part number sent against the page you ordered from. Just a thought.

2)You can get the Stanard Civil War 1858 Rem from Cabelas for $159.99 Pietta they work great and the .45 Long Colt cylinder Conversion from R&D Shop for $240 I think. I'll try posting the site and a Pic.

There is also the Kirst Konverters,www.kirstkonverter.com. They are a very well made high quality product, IMHO. I am very happy with mine. I use them for SASS cowboy matches.I have one in a 51 navy, and one in a 58 remmington. The one in the remmington is a very early .44 colt model which they dont make any more. I have put well over 3 thousand rnds through it with out a problem. The one in the navy i have only put about 300 rnds through, I haven't had it that long. One thing you might want to think about if going to a conversion is sleeving the barrels. At first I just shot hollow base bullets through my 58, the gas caused the bullet to expand to fit the rifling.Later I sleeved it to .429 R&D offers several types of conversions and some for unlined barrels and some for lined barrels. I have not used the R&D conversions but have seen them and have friends that shoot them at SASS Cowboy matches. They seem to be well made and hold up as well as the Kirst models.

The top Remington appears to be the one I was thinking of.

The Kirst version appears to be more like what I'm after for a '58 Remington conversion remake, but I've not yet looked further into the site. Thanks.

Editted just a minute later to add:

I just clicked on the version for the Colt's Navy .36 and it appears to be a lot like Clint's Colt/Dance/whatever in The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly.

The differance

Just keep in mind that in Kirst Konverter Kits only hold 5 shots one blank chamber do to space. R&D Convertable Conversions hold 6 shots. Just to let you know. Mine that I showed you was for my Colt Dragoon, the 1858 Rem R&D Cyl. is made identical only a little smaller as the Dragoon is a 4 1/2 lb. Rev and the 1858 New Army Remington is 2.2lbs.

Right. And I'd want that sixth chamber just for the option. I'm actually wanting to find a repro of the original Remington Armory Conversion.

Right. And while I've always liked the old Colt horse pistols, I'm more interested in the lighter models.

R&D Closest to the Original/Preacher in Pale Rider

The R&D Cylinder with multiple Pin Plate is as authentic as you'll find...do a search for the original late Civil War version for the 1858 Drop-in to .45LC. You'll hardly see much differance. Th Kirst are a good Kit but I perfer the R&D for authenticity on the Rems. By the way I am a Rem man myself. But I like the Colts in a differant sense. I have from the 1836 Paterson on up, but only two Rems an Old one and a new one..cause with Rems that's all you need...LoL!

I know what you mean. Having all the different Colt's could get aggravating with so many versions. The only other Remingtons are brass frame pocket models and there's only one or two models I can recall of those.
