How do you tell what you have( Russian, Yugo, Chinese, ect.)???

Also, how do you convert the SKS to take the SKS mags??? And is it worth it to even try it???

Thanks in advance,
Justin

As far as detachable mags, I don't know first-hand. Usually people recommend against it. I believe there are some models of SKS that work better with detachable mags than others. Perhaps that simonov.net website has something to say about it...

Unless you buy an SKS that was built to accept real AK magazines, don't bother. Stick with using top-loading stripper clips.

Practically speaking, if you want a magazine-fed SovBlok rifle, just buy an AK.

Cant speak for Russian or Yugo's but My Chinese has markings on the barrel in chinese.....

As to detachable mags....go for it I recommend the Tapco 20 round models. Simply remove the trigger assembly drop the trigger and the magazine will also drop. Then snap the trigger assembly in place.

One note that before I changed to a composite T-6 stock I used the Tapco magazine, but I did have to shave the inside of the wood stock to make it easier to install and remove. Once I move it to the composite stock the tapco magazines worked great. I also reccommend loading and unloading the magazine a few times prior to usuing. That seems to correct a feed problem I had the first time I shot it. Since that time I have shot about 300 rounds with no problems resulting from failure to feed.

dont bother, most are unreliable.

OUTDATED KNOWLEDGE ALERT!!

This gentleman has clearly never tried the famous Tapco 20. (rd magazine. Another good reason why it's good to visit a specific board for your gun.

A Chinese SKS will usually have some Chinese characters engraved on the receiver. A Yugo SKS will usually be slightly heavier with a grenade launcher on the end of the barrel and a flip up grenade sight. Those are the two most common types of SKS floating around lately, it seems.

Russian, Albanian, etc... they all have their own arsenal stamps.

ah yes, out of date knowledge about the great quality of CRAPCO magazines...

first. and im saying this because im in a bad mood. learn the meaning of the word MOST. as prominently highlighted from my original post.

AND IM GOING TO ANNOUNCE IT IN ALL CAPS SINCE IM YELLING LOUDEST THAT MEANS IM RIGHT!

G2 triggers aside. tapco is in no way known for their quality and reliable products.

even if your rifle works great, it doesn't mean the magazines will work in all rifles. and many don't.

I had a Tapco 20-rd mag in my SKS, and it was just as unreliable as the others. In addition to being unreliable, I had to wrap the top with electrical tape so that it didn't wobble horribly while attached.

I'm going to cede the point...that was bad form on my part bad mood notwithstanding.

Tapcos get nothing, however, but 10-star reviews from the gents at the Boards.

I've never heard of the wobbling issue before. What flavor do you have it in?

The Tapco people took their time on that magazine to try and make it as usable as possible for all flavors of SKS. I think their work has been largely reflected in the results I've seen. This is the internets after all, but besides your account, I can only recall one other instance where a Tapco did not fit properly, besides in a yugo where a little shaving is necessary.

I had a Norinco. When the mag (shown below) was inserted, it would wobble about 15 degrees both left and right. After wrapping several layers of electrical tape around the topmost portion of the body, the wobbling ceased, but feeding was still poor. I bought it after hearing that this mag *might* work, as I had tried several varieties, both US and foreign made, with no success. This was also about 3 years ago.

+1 on sksboard.com. It's one of the best sites out there. I have a Norinco and I installed a T-6 Stock. After fooling around with a 20 round Tapco mag for awhile, I reverted back to stripper clips and the original magazine...100% reliable...period end of sentence. The tapco was/is reliable but reloads are far easier with stripper clips and ammo is easier to carry.

The Yugo's have a very light wood on their stock (like some of the non-German Mausers) and, correct me if I'm wrong, often come with a grenade launcher.

The Chinese have an almost red tint to them, some chinese symbols and some with the spike bayonet.

The Russian's are very dark, have the blade bayonet and should have Russian markings on them. They are also the most beautiful of the SKS family.

As far as the mag goes, I would stick with the 10rd. fixed mag unless you can find the 20rd. fixed mag. They are chi-com and probably only fit the Chinese SKS. They have a cool red star on them. Also, they are pretty rare and are about $80+

The AK style mags are mostly complete junk and do not work the way a magazine should. It's like putting a round peg in a square hole everytime you put it in. The gun typically needs to be modified for them to even work too.

I have actually found the YUGO wood to be much heavier than other types I have handled, but that may be just because of the beefier overall build. On one of my Yugo's however, the wood is extremely dense, much more than anything else i have seen.

As far as removing the original, it's very easy to do when you disassemble, When you reassemble just don't put it back in. For instructions check www.surplusrifle.com
