Store owner shoots suspect

By JULIE DAFFERN
LAREDO MORNING TIMES

An attempted robbery at a grocery store in South Laredo late Monday left the suspected robber dead and a rescuer seriously injured.

Officials said 19-year-old David Rivera was dressed in black, had a handkerchief over his face and was armed with a rifle when he attempted to rob two women outside of a "beer run" drive-thru in the 3300 block of Santa Barbara. As the women were accosted, the owner of the El H-Evito grocery store next door ran outside to intervene.

Owner Manuel Garcia, 59, was shot in the left hip, but he managed to return fire from 10 feet away, hitting Rivera in the head, said County Court-at-Law Judge Jesus "Chuy" Garza.

Rivera, the son of Laredo police spokesman Juan Rivera, was pronounced dead at the scene by Garza.

An autopsy is pending.

Garza added that some of Rivera's organs were donated at the request of his father.

The storeowner was taken to Laredo Medical Center, where he underwent emergency surgery on his hip. He was in fair condition Tuesday night, hospital officials reported.

Meanwhile, Yesenia Paredes, 18, and Griselda Gonzalez, 20, who were with the alleged robber, were arrested on charges of aggravated robbery and engaging in organized criminal activity.

One woman was arrested at the scene, while the other was picked up somewhere else, said Lt. Jesus Torres, who is in charge of the homicide and robbery divisions.

None of the four women were injured.

Garza said he would set bond for both women today.

There were no details immediately available about the two would-be victims.

Records show that Rivera had been arrested in the past on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, engaging in organized crime and theft, among other charges.

Tuesday, the store and beer run were closed. Several neighbors in the residential area said they hadn't heard a thing; one man said he had seen a flurry of activity around midnight, but didn't know what had happened.

Good on him.

One less goblin.

Wounded in the hip, 10 feet away and still gets a head shot. Wonder if that was luck or if he was going for it.

Another parole and probation poster boy.

At least he wasn't a complete loss. People are literally dying for kidneys, livers, hearts, and the like.

I am sad for the father. I hope I never have to experience the pain of knowing that one of my children was of more use to society dead than alive.

Ah, the poor family of the dead felon. We all cry for them. Never mind the two women he threatened and the one man he attempted to kill. We don't care about those people or their families.

Before crying for the family, did you ever think that they might have been contributors to the problem?

You should focus on the above quote.

Double Naught - While I may not have any sympathy whatsoever for the scum that commit these crimes, often the family knows nothing about it. I happen to know someone fairly well whose husband participated in one of the more infamous multiple killings in Austin. Case was open for years, until one of the guys confessed and implicated the others. This crime happened before this person got married and had a family, so I not only despise him for the pain he put his victims and their families through, but also the pain he put his wife and daughter through.

Sometimes good families have bad offspring. Their pain is no less sorrowfull.
+1

Well said, Grampster.

This is a classic lose, lose, lose, lose situation.

loser 1 - The women victims
loser 2 - The man shot in the hip
loser 3 - The bg's family
loser 4 - The bg himself. He probably didn't go to his eternal reward.

[Sarcasm mode ON]
Do I detect you reading into my words things I did not say OR imply?
[Sarcasm mode OFF]
Please do not include me in your use of the word "we" as I do not agree with some of your comments.

Actually I did. I also thought that a father capable of donating some of his son's organs, rather than letting them rot with his son's body might, just possibly be one of the good guys!

Amen, Grampster.

I am NOT sorry for the dead goblin, he got what he needed and deserved.
The father, however if he is the man I hope his is, will spend many nights wondering where he might have made a difference or changed the path of his son.

personal responability

gotta agree with grampster on this one, maybe they were bad parents i don't know but the bg made the choice to do the crime, i dought the father sent him out to do it........
