Has anyone tried a Tyler Trigger Shoe on a j-frame? I have an older Chief's Special with a thin, grooved trigger. I understand that a trigger shoe may be more comfortable and even reduce the perceived trigger weight. I am also interested in hearing from anyone who has used the Tyler T-Grip on a round butt j-frame with the original stocks. Are they as comfortable as Hogues or Uncle Mike's?

P.S. How do you get the subject line to appear in boldface in the thread list? My attempt obviously didn't work!

rbb: Suggest you do a search for Tyler Grips and shoes...I suspect you will find many past comments on this forum relating to you question.

Grips...like everything else on a revolver are relevant to the owner...what he or she likes...what size hands they have...etc. Personally, I like the Tyler Grip on my 642 better than any other grip. Just my opinion.

I like the T-grips with the original magnas, and think it feels about as good as an Uncle Mike boot grip or Hogue Bantams. My preference is to go one frame size higher on the Tylers, i.e. put K frame T-grips on J frame gun, as seen in the picture below. As to the trigger shoes, I have used them and they are OK for the range or other plinking, but many folks considered them unsafe for a carry gun. Be careful putting it into a holster made for a smaller trigger. They are best left to use on shotguns IMO.

Thanks Stiab and DawgFvr for the pics. They make an interesting comparison. I gotta say that the over-sized grips on Stiab's j-frame look better to me than the "correct" size on the 642. And they both look better than replacing the original wood stocks. It would never have occurred to me to order the "wrong" size. Did you (Stiab) have to make any modification to make them fit so perfectly? Why are the trigger shoes considered unsafe for carry? What do you think about having the trigger face smoothed instead - or should I just leave well enough alone?

No mods necessary, the K Tylers will fit perfect on a J frame. Trigger shoes were used more on revolvers years ago when many (most?) had narrow ribbed triggers, and most importantly when holsters were not form fitted to the gun. Today many holsters are so perfectly form fitted so that an expanded trigger (with shoe) may catch on insertion and possibly cause the gun to fire. Also, they can get loose and slide up and down the trigger. If you tighten them too much, it can actually split the trigger shoe, which is made of aluminum but has steel screws. Hope this helps some.

I have an older “Chief” (1979) with the narrow, ribbed trigger. I have ordered a new holster and will wait to see if it will accept a wider trigger without catching before I consider ordering a shoe. I searched “Tyler grips and shoes” on this site (as DawgFvr suggested) and found lots of comments – mostly favorable. A few suggested Pachymer and I will look at those. I will probably be ordering the K frame T-grips and getting those wood stocks back on asap. Thank you both for your help.

Last year I bought a 4" Colt Python that had a trigger shoe on it. That was the first thing I got rid of. The trigger shoes I have seen stick out beyond the sides of the trigger guards. When holstering this can cause the handgun to fire and from what I have heard from my old days in private security it has. Try to find a wider trigger but not too wide and have it installed.

From what I've read here, I don't think I'll bother with the shoe. Perhaps just polishing (grinding) the edges and face of the factory trigger would be an improvement?

I just ordered a shiny black K frame T-grip for my old blue J frame. The woman on the phone couldn't have been nicer, and I should receive the grips in 7-10 days. The only reason I replaced the wood stocks with Hogues was because of the knuckle-busting my middle finger got from the trigger guard. It pained me to take off the originals and I was afraid they would never see the light of day again. This should solve the knuckle problem while restoring the classic look. I can't wait!
