Whats the difference in cost between a Type 56 and AK47/M class 3 NFA rifle? I know a registered AK typically is in the +/-15k range, but will a T56 prove cheaper?

A Type 56 is an AK; a Chinese made one. If you're asking which will have more collectible value, that depends on the specific guns being compared.

I know that it is an AK, I was only seeing if/when I had the money for a FA rifle, I would save some money by getting a type 56 instead of a genuine

The Chinese Model AKs function just as good...if not better. I have personally fired FA Mak90s that my buddy whos an FFL07 SOT converted and it ran like a champ.
I also ran a Suchka, but I dont know what nationality it was.

To be quite honest, If it was me, I would buy the gunsmithing equipment, and a few AK47 kits, some NoDak receivers, and apply for an FFL07 SOT permit from the Govt and just make the AK47s in FA myself. Granted, if your permit lapsed you would have to sell or destroy the AKs, but you will pay ALOT less that $15K if you have the know how or if you can follow directions. I know guys that got their FFL07-SOT for this very reason and found out they LOVED biulding FA guns, or at least the ones they could. Plus you can make your own Supps...if you have the know how. IIRC, here in Oregon, you can buy all the parts to make guns FA, and you have to put them together yourself. Like the same way you wold buy the parts to build your own AR, but you would drill the holes and buy a class 3 trigger kit. IIRC.

I doubt it a Chinese rifle would save you any money, for two reasons. First, a Type 56 IS a genuine AK, and second, most of the value in a machine gun like an AK comes from it being registered. Nationality is much less important.

I was under the impression that the ATF frowned upon people getting FFL's for collecting purposes*. Do your friends own gun stores and operate as a business?

*With the notable exception of the C&R license.

You would never be approved for the SOT if those were your intentions. You need to be in the business of manufacturing Title II arms to get that SOT. That includes satisfying all local laws and fees for a manufacturing business.

If you use your SOT primarily to acquire toys, you will get shut down and possibly go to prison.

Well of course you have to do actual business. LOL. I guess I thought that kinda went wthout saying. Common Sense if you will. There's many types of business that you could do: you can do transfers for people, you can order parts for people, you can build AR or AK or any kits for people, and so on. Its not that hard guys.

Ya my friend actually builds guns for a living, owning and operating his business building AKs and ARs and such...and at the same time he makes supps and always sends the proper paperwork in of course. He has also made F/As out of some of his rifles strictly for R&D...with the proper Paperwork of course. There is red tape in becoming an FFL07-SOT also, but heck man, $12K-$14K (or with even half of that) and you could easily do it. Its an option.

Of course, If he was to let his license lapse or whatever, then he would have to get rid of his Class 3 stuff, but otherwise if you have your FFL07 with SOT, it is possible...from what I understand.

There has to be a way that guys like Tromix do their R&D on making a Saiga 12 into a F/A Shotgun, it all starts somewhere. There has to be a way Gemtech and RedStick Firearms started out making Supps. They had to start out somewhere, most likely with very few to zero employees.

I would however suggest you check your local laws on the matters...the laws are different from state to state. I would suggest AZ or Texas if you wanna go into the business of building firearms. :)
