Gun Control Hasn't Helped Chicago, Group Says

(CNSNews.com) - Second Amendment supporters say strict gun control has made Chicago the most murderous city in the nation for the year just ended. "Chicago finished off the year with more murders than New York or Los Angeles," said Second Amendment Foundation founder Alan Gottlieb. "During the past 12 months, 599 people were murdered in Chicago, three more than in New York, where 596 people were slain, and about 100 more than in Los Angeles."

Gottlieb called it "remarkable" that Chicago, New York and Los Angeles have some of the nation's strictest gun laws, but even so, they still lead the nation when it comes to the number of homicides.

Gottlieb, in a press release, noted that Chicago Mayor Richard Daley has made his "anti-gun philosophy" a cornerstone of his administration, to the detriment of the city.

He compared the situation in Chicago to that in Detroit, where the once-high murder rate has dropped to its lowest level in years.

"Two years ago," Gottlieb noted, "Michigan reformed its concealed carry law, and today, thousands of law-abiding citizens in Michigan are legally armed. Gosh, do you suppose there is any correlation?"

Mayor Daley should publicly admit that gun control in his city has been an absolute failure, Gottlieb said.

Chicago police announced last week that the city ended the year 599 homicides, down from 648 a year earlier and 665 in 2001. It's the first time since 1967 that the total has dropped below 600, the police department said.

Chicago police superintendent Philip Cline blamed the city's murder problem on gangs, guns and drugs.

The Second Amendment Foundation says it is dedicated to "the Constitutional right and heritage to privately own and possess firearms," and it actively works to inform the public about the consequences of gun control.

Last year, Michigan's murder rate dropped below Ohio's - for the first time in 40 years.

Believe me, that got Ohio's attention. They've viewed Detroit as a cesspool (with good reason!) for years.

This happened two years after MI went shall-issue.

I have a theory: the number of people who pack in MI didn't go up all THAT much. Permits tripled. But the media reports on gun carry increases got the attention of the crooks, who switched to less confrontational crimes.

The same thing happened in reverse in England after '96 (Dunblaine). Brits had already been disarmed for all practical purposes; the gun control hysteria that swept the nation after that didn't really harm people's self defense rights as it was already screwed up. The real problem was that the grabber hysteria (and the prosecution of Tony Martin about the same time) informed otherwise ILL informed crooks that it was open season, no bag limit. Crime rose steadily thereafter and they'll pass the (falling) US murder rate totals soon enough.

The point is, "reality" may matter less than "criminal perception", which in terms of following current events, is only influenced by the most strident panic-laden crap imaginable (such as the wailings of the grabbers when shall-issue took effect and the predictions of "blood in the streets" - that stuff actually helped *reduce* violence, although in a fashion unforseen by the grabbers.

I'm sure you're right. Several studies of convicted felons have clearly demonstrated they're far more afraid of law-abiding armed American citizens than cops.

How true but the fact remains that Gun Control or lack thereof is just one factor to consider in analyzing violent crime.

After all the article said that:

"Second Amendment supporters say strict gun control has made Chicago the most murderous city in the nation for the year just ended."

Notice the clear "no ifs and or buts "....And I say thats as bs a statement as saying the opposite.

Problem is that to see the same stats reported in NYC papers they talk about the steadily decreasing murder rate . . . . now what they don't say is that they are using the Dinkins years of almost complete lawlessness as a baseline.

Lived in the city back then . . . . a real treat.

So if you are arguing for a NYC CCW lawwith an anti, how do you frame the argument given that spin? The number could be lower?

While I am thinking about it, would be nice to see the per capita figures as well. I think Chicago has fewer people than both nyc and la . . . . if so, makes their number worse.
