January 1, 2004, 7:00am (EST): WLS (890 AM, Chicago) just announced that gun-free Chicago ended 2003 with 599 murders.:uhoh:

While this is the lowest number since Chicago started its unending flurry of "gun control" laws in the mid-'60s, it is five more than New York City which is much larger in population and at least allows its subjects to possess and maybe carry a pistol. However, gun control is working. No one except those in favor with Mayor Daley may legally possess or carry a pistol in Chicago!

Man, not a day goes by that I do not thank Vishnu that I left. After I get out of the office today, I'm doing my drills!!!

Hi El Tejon:

Hi El Tejon:

Quick personal question. Did you take “Defensive Shotgun†at Thunder Ranch in 2002?
Happy New Year.
FRIZ

Actually, that's pretty good for Chicago. There will probably be celebrations. Last year the number was 667, if I recall correctly.

Hey, that is less than 2 per day!!:)

What are we doing about the underemployment of coroners?

Gun Control = People Control

Another failed experiment. THose 599 must have been caused by guns from the evil manufacturer's flooding the market and from out of city/county sales. Cause we all know that criminals obey the law. :scrutiny:

If Daley and his entire political machine in cook county were disposed of and everybody armed what would next years numbers be? This is truely a worthwhile humanitarian experiment.

Hmmm . . . I wonder what the demographics were, among both shooters and shootees?

Some years back Chicago completed a 20 year study of murders in the city. IIRC about 3/4 of the killers had prior criminal records. The good news was so did 2/3 of the victims, putting these murders firmly into the "good riddance" category in many people's minds.

This was bad enough, from the standpoint of the Politically Correct, but then someone had the audacity to break things down by . . . uh . . . ethnicity. These numbers were SO skewed that, for PC reasons, the study was pretty much "spiked" as a news story.

El Tejon,
For a minute, I thought you had news that the City Council and gang bangers had agreed to disarm. While not the best solution it would at least place everyone on an equal footing....

Chicago regains title of U.S. murder capital

Way to go Chitown! We knew you could do it. Score another win for the Daley camp; although you missed the 600 goal. L.A. fell to third with a dismal showing of under 500 but I'm sure they will do better next year.

Chicago is U.S. murder capital

CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) -- Despite a sharp drop in homicides, Chicago has regained a title it didn't want: America's murder capital.

The city finished 2003 with 599 homicides, police said Thursday. That was down from 648 a year earlier and the first time since 1967 that the total dipped below 600.

Still, the nation's third-largest city outpaced all others for the second time in three years. New York, with about three times the population, ended the year with 596 homicides. Los Angeles, which had the most murders in 2002 at 658, wound up 2003 with an estimated total just under 500.

Chicago's new police superintendent, Philip J. Cline, joined colleagues elsewhere in blaming homicides largely on a volatile mix of gangs, guns and drugs.

But officials pointed to a new system established in June, partly inspired by New York's computerized crime analysis unit, that contributed to an 18 percent drop in Chicago murders in the second half of 2003 compared with a year earlier.

In New York, the unofficial murder tally of 596 compared with 584 in 2002. That was a 2 percent jump but still made 2003 the city's second straight year below 600 -- dramatically less than the 2,245 homicides recorded in 1990.

St. Louis logged its lowest murder total in more than four decades, a showing that police credited to aggressive efforts to track down violent offenders.

Police said there were 69 killings in the Gateway City in 2003, matching the total of 1962. The number was a 39 percent decrease from the 2002 total of 113.

St. Louis Police Chief Joe Mokwa said the addition of 100 more officers to the force and "the strategy of confronting the most violent offenders has left our neighborhoods more stable."

Baltimore homicides increased for the first time since 1998 as authorities said killings became more targeted, often in connection with the drug trade.

As of Wednesday, Baltimore reported 271 killings in 2003, compared with 253 in 2002. It was a 7 percent increase and the highest homicide total during the four-year tenure of Mayor Martin O'Malley, who campaigned on a pledge to reduce annual totals to 175.

Baltimore Police Commissioner Kevin P. Clark said part of the increase was due to gunmen hitting their victims with more bullets.

"They are not looking to shoot a guy in the leg to send a message," Clark said. "They are out to kill these guys."

Preliminary figures from the District of Columbia showed the homicide rate dropping 6 percent in the nation's capital, from 262 in 2002 to 247 last year. But 2004 began with two homicides in about nine hours.

No final figures were available for Detroit, but an FBI report in mid-December put the city on a pace to end 2003 with its fewest homicides since 1968. The total would be about 365, the FBI said.

Is he talking about the banned guns and drugs....and gangs???

Now we know why Kevin P. Clark is the police commissioner. He is too stupid to be anything else. Bet he couldn't write a parking ticket without help.

one more reason to look down and laugh as you fly over the communist controlled and subsidy sucking mid west.

Jonsey, tell me about it. Some of us are right next to the cage.:uhoh:

Anywho, today after a making my afternoon rounds, I popped inside a downtown bodega/grocery to get a Sobe (I give up lattes to get hooked on Tsunamis, go figure) and see the headline of the Indianapolis Star which proclaims that murders in Indy were down.

Hey, wait a minute, how can that be when Indiana is awash in guns and allow any and all residents to carry pistols with $25 and a background check where Chicago has had a handgun freeze since '83 and bans all kinds of things legal in Indy: eeevil black guns, machine guns, suppressors, carrying pistols? How can this be? Since guns cause crime, according to Mayor Daley, should not Indianapolis have had a huge increase in murder?

should not Indianapolis have had a huge increase in murder?
It must be really irritating to the elitist control freaks that the common folk don't conform to their pet theories. :)

edit: post number 1877 - the year of the Nez Perce flight for freedom :(

Not to put too fine a point on it, but isn't that more than the number of US soldiers who were killed in Iraq during the same year?
