U.S Marines; What would you use?

Can us Army guys join in?

I still love my old M16. Worked for me and my friends really well.

With the risk of getting flamed here by the old Devil Dogs...... If you are not a grunt, you AINT a grunt! Just because a mechanic had some good training in leg work doesnt make him an infantryman. Marines produce excellent rifleman no matter what their job is, but there is a lot more to being an infantryman than good rifle marksmanship.

No offense to any servicemen in the room.

1st Mar Div 83-87. I'm going to say an M4 simply because in a battlefield situation you may find yourself in need of replacement parts and ammo. Any major conflict will have these laying about in good supply for that platform. Ideally I'd like to have an M-14 in a Socom or scout config but if something went wrong you're screwed and ammo is heavy for that monster in quantity.

I'm an old Marine so I'll leave the up close fighting to the younguns and I'll stay in the rear with the gear with my M14 where the added range is well worth the extra weight. I might be too old and busted up to fight but I can still prepare chow, fix machines, do first aid, run a radio, and haul supply's.

Really sharpsdressedman, a marine cook or clerk is better trained than an army ranger or an army infantryman? Don't believe all the hype or the tv commercials.

Far off topic here, but you mentioned the original militia.
Our first govt. was only one vote from selecting German as our official language, due to so many Deutsche and Nederlands settlers. "

Ja...ist..."off topic".

Army 68-69 I would take my M-16 with M-193 ammo. The weapon is light, and a 20" barrel. I had no trouble with mine. Byron

USN Master At Arms here,

Id probably want an AUG type rifle. Probably a select fire STG E4 or something. Insight ISM-V, acog, leupold mk4 or the like.

No sacrificing barrel length for size! Common caliber! Reliable tested system, gas piston

Every Marine a rifleman yes, but every Marine a infantryman the are not. I can work with any rifle design or cofiguration but I was served best with the m-16 A3. M4 would of been nice but not availible yet.

current devil-M4 but an updated one say the KAC with all ambi controls and a free float tube. eotech/aimpoint with a magnifier.

plus a decent side arm. I personally own a M9 but I know there are much better out there

I am very familiar with the AR/M16 platform so, I think I'd stick with that but, using a piston operated upper.

I have always thought that the M16 series should have been chambered in something in the 6mm-6.5mm range. I believe the .260 Rem would be nearly ideal for a battle rifle.

So, I suppose my answer is ...a piston operated M16 series rifle chambered in 260 Rem.

Won't fit...have to use an AR-10 action for the .260Rem., however 6.5Grendel will fit in the M16/AR-15 receiver/magazine.

:)

I'm with you Smith357 (and probably R. Lee Ermey)! Though not a Marine, I carried the M14 and M16 in Vietnam and am a rifleman. Getting old now but still have good eyes and can use iron sights if I need to. Think I'll go the other way though - a modified M4, in fact that's what I built for myself using a 16" midlength A4 upper with chopped carry handle in case I decide to add a red dot. She'll do!

Swiftak,
I was just looking for a clean cross section of fighting men that at least had some expectation of being riflemen. If I said "Army", we'd be getting everyone who ever wore the uniform (and I am one of them). I was an MP, and while that role has changed a bit, I would not have considered myself a rifleman by what I was trained to do. The Army gets less "basic" time than the Marines, and once out of basic, the Army pretty much forgets what they learned about rifle combat once they go to some other school (except those fighting men, like infantry, airborne/rangers, etc). I just figured we'd honor the fact that Marines get respect from all branches for gettingdown and dirty, and might know what a rifle should do.

With access to critical spare parts- 16" FAL folder w/M68 (portable destruction, and .308 turns cover to concealment)

No access to spare parts
- AK ALL THE WAY.

As far as the weight goes, the basic infantryman's load has always been ~100lbs, so for my money I want the most bang for the buck.

the last guys to actually win a war carried m1 garands

I love when people's eccentricity is so glaring. Aside from that point, define war and define winning.

Furthermore, the most significant differences between WWII and many subsequent conflicts do not include the rifles used.

Yeah, these people are celebrating the devastating American loss in Kuwait, mostly the fault of the useless M16 rifles carried by US forces:

Here's Saddam Hussein, celebrating his overwhelming victory over American forces with their lousy M16s and M4s:
