Fleeing suspect drags U.S. marshal behind car

By ANDRIA SIMMONS
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

A U.S. marshal was injured and a suspect was wounded Wednesday during an arrest and manhunt in Snellville.

James Ergas, a supervisor-inspector with the marshal's office, said a deputy marshal tried to take Reuben Odell Levy, 35, of South Carolina into custody outside a Rite Aid drug store at Athens Highway and Rosebud Road. Richard Mecum, the U.S. marshal for the Atlanta office, identified the officer as Jeremy Smith.

Mecum said Levy got into a vehicle and drove away, but Smith reached into the car and tried to grab the keys. The marshal was dragged a short distance and shot Levy, Ergas said. Levy drove to the Hawthorn Glen subdivision about a half-mile away and abandoned the vehicle, Mecum said.

Marshals and Gwinnett County law enforcement officers conducted a manhunt in the area and found Levy hiding in a tool shed behind a house.

Smith, an eight-year agent who works out of the Atlanta office, was taken to Emory Eastside Medical Center. Mecum said the injuries seemed to be minor.

Levy was taken to Gwinnett Medical Center. His condition was not available Wednesday afternoon, but Mecum said the injury did not appear to be life-threatening.

The manhunt caused authorities to shut down the parking lot at the Rite Aid.

"We didn't hear the gunshot, but we saw all the cops come flying in," said Jason Reardon, manager of a Papa John's pizza restaurant in the area. "There was a lot of chaos, and they shut down the parking lot."

Levy was wanted for two counts of grand larceny, one count of aggravated assault with a weapon and a federal probation violation stemming from a bank robbery conviction, Ergas said

Well, he used a gun, but it isn't really about guns, is it?

Does it feel good to add to the ol' post/thread count?

Being the first one to report on some news tidbit doesn't matter. This is not a competition.

Hey! Somebody else got shot! It's gun related.

Let's speculate endlessly on the weapon used, the mental state and family heritige of the suspect, and how we would have done a better job in shot placement. People getting shot makes for such SPORTY dialogue!

WooHOO! It's gonna be a fun night!
