Hey,

I've been thinking of a nylon shoulder holster for 1858 8" remmie.

I wonder if http://www.unclemikes.com/holsters/sidekick-holsters/sidekick-vertical-shoulder-holsters will work in size 4. It says 7 - 8 1/2" barrel medium and large double action revolvers and 6 - 7 1/2" barrel single action revolvers.

I cant wrap my head around it why double action can have longer barrels than single action?

There is also this which says that is made for 1858.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/VERTICAL-RI...d&pid=100005&rk=1&rkt=6&sd=191000489777&rt=nc

But thats about 20 dollars more when taken import fees and shipping into account.

Sorry for the links, but my ipad keeps crashing and loosing all i have written when trying to make proper clickable links.

Edit: Seems the forum did it for me.. :)

Single Action revolvers usually have a maximum 7 1/2 inch barrel length. Some S&W double-action models go out to 8 3/8 inch.

I would check with the holster manufacturer, but I'd say that the chances of it working with your New Model Army revolver is highly likely.

Grip frame is different on both. Changes the pointability.
An 1858 BP revolver was designed to be carried on a horse. Nobody would have ever thought to lug such a monster under their arm. Historically speaking, of course.
Always liked Uncle Mike's stuff. Cheap and durable. Carried a Inglis BHP in one, occasionally, while in The Queen's Service, 30 some years ago. Still have it.
E-Bay is an evil anti-firearm ownership empire that financially supports the people who want to take your 1858 away from you.

I know you are looking for nylon...

...But I use to own a leather Bianchi shoulder rig that was for a S&W 29 but I used it for a Ruger SBH 7 1/2" with no problem. The holster had a curved flat spring embedded in the leather that did not require the short retaining strap.

I would think it would work for you, but don't think it is produced any more.

Good luck in your endeavors.

I think you may be posting on the wrong thread. What does pointability have to do with holster fit?

First, there is no such thing (insofar as replica C&B revolvers, Pietta or Uberti) as a true 1858 Remington-Beals revolver. The replicas that the Italians produce most emulate revolvers produced by Remington from 1862-1875.

They most emulate the Remington New Model Revolver (1863-1875).

The "horse pistols" were the original Walker, the Whitneyville Hartford Dragoon, the U.S. Walker Replacement Dragoon, the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Model Dragoons, and the LeMat. The so-called 1858 Remington revolver would not have been much larger than a 7 1/2" Ruger SBH. It would have been classified as a belt pistol along with the 1851, 1860, 1861, and 1862 Colt belt pistols. Not even in the same class.

E-Bay is an evil anti-firearm ownership empire that financially supports the people who want to take your 1858 away from you.

Wow. I suppose you have proof of that. I bought a nice Pietta 1851 wood grip a few months ago on EBay (from a guy that buys guns from Cabela's or elsewhere on sale and parts them out to make a few bucks) and was satisfied. I don't own an 1858 whatever, and no one has come to take my 1851 as of yet. I suspect that the powers that be would not even know how to load it, nor fire it. C&B revolvers are considered non-firearms insofar as the BATFE is concerned, so I don't think they will come with a warrant and break down your door to get your BP pistol.

Have a good day!

I asked from the retailer and he had no idea if it will fit. Also sent a question to uncle mikes, maybe they'll have an answer.

I suppose the frame of 1858 remmie shouldn't be that much different of an 8" double action revolver so size 4 should be good in my mind.

Understand that Uncle Mike holsters are not make & model specific, except in a very general sense. Some other manufacturer's rigs are make & model specific, and intended to not fit anything else. If anything, you will find the fit to be slightly loose.

Well got the answer from uncle mikes customer service. "Possibly. However, it might be a little short. It would be best to try it at a retail store if you have one near you to be sure." Not overly conclusive and i dont think that i'll find it anywhere near here.

Maybe i'll just take the risk or then pay extra $20 for the other model that should be made for the 1858.

The Remington 1858/New Model 1863 all had a 7 1/2" barrel, so I see no reason that Uncle Mike's #4 holster will not work.

Let us know as to your conclusion.

Went for the especially made for 1858. I will post, when i have the change to test it, how it works.

I wasn't able to find anything about 1858 having a 7,5" barrel, everyplace says 8".

I am a little confused. You keep on saying the one on Ebay is $20.00 more than from Uncle Mike's but I find it is $21.95 cheaper. It's price is $34.95 free shipping where the Uncle Mike's is $47.95 plus $8.95 shipping = $56.90. Let us know how it is when you get it. I would like to buy one for my 1858 that I have a cartridge conversion for.

The price for the uncle mikes was found from Amazon. And the shipping is to northern europe, that makes the difference.

Got the holster today. Seems quite good, allthough don't have the gun to test it on now. Looks to be well built and has some shoulder paddings which I think uncle mikes didn't have.

Hope you enjoy it. I like shoulder rigs in that if you're out in the woods, you don't have to remove your irons to attend to the calls of nature.

I should really learn how to sew my own. I'm thinking I'd like to get leather holsters for other guns but don't like what's on the market or it's not offered on the market.
