I recently acquired a new Uberti 1858. When I pull the hammer back from "half cock" to "full cock" slowly, the cylinder will stop several thousandths short of allowing the bolt to drop.
When pulled back quickly, it appears to drop just fine. In the 50 or so "dry-cocks" I've done, a very slight marring of the cylinder bolt stops has occurred on both sides of the cylinder. I suspect it is from the bouncing that occurs due to the slightly off timing.
The portion of the hand or pawl that sticks out from the frame looks like it was filed with the roughest file on the planet
From the reading I've done, I concluded or assumed the hand is too short and I should fit a new hand. Is there any reason to assume something else? I am going to order a new hand to fit while polishing things up according to a chapter in Sam Fadala's book on hobby gunsmithing.
