I've been unable to find a copy of the manual online, and there has been some discussion with my friend about this, so I figured I'd ask the experts here.

I've been thinking of getting a lever action rifle in .357 Magnum. My top two choices are the Marlin 1894C and the Uberti 1873 Short Rifle. Both are short and handy, both will make a great companion to a revolver I plan to get, also in .357 Magnum, and both have great reputations for having smooth actions.

The Uberti is obviously a lot prettier, and a lot more expensive. However, can Uberti's replicas stand up to modern hot .357 Magnum loads? I know the Marlin can, but I don't know if the Ubertis can.

I have one, 1873 carbine from Uberti in 357magnum.. (I also have the same, in rifle)

So far she has eaten all the 357mag I gave to her..

Magtech, Sellier&Bellot, and home reload.

I must admit that I never gave her the strongest one, but other than that she works like a charm.. Maybe it can handle hottest reload, but I never whished to try.

here are my carbine and 1873 rifle in 357mag ... the yellowboys are in 44-40 though

for sure, they are damn more pretty than a marlin 94...

True, there can be no argument regarding the attractiveness of the Uberti offerings VS the Marlin 1894C, but considering that mine would be for home defense and to take along on camping trips, the beauty of the Uberti rifles might make them *less* suitable. Wouldn't want to get a pretty rifle all dirty and dinged up...

I'll agree with the beauty aspect. And if you're going to ding it up, well, that just adds character!

I've got a Uberti 1873 24" barrel in 45LC and I shoot the crap out of it. I shoot some cowboy loads and also some pretty hot hunting loads with it. Also have a Winchester 94AE 24" barrel in 44Mag that is also a very good rifle.

The Uberti uses the original toggle link design first used in the Volcanic firearms of the 1840's, and continued in the Henry and finally Winchester rifles.

It simply isn't nearly as strong as the Marlin, and if you plan on shooting a lot of hot loads, I'd recommend the Marlin.
If you can stick with standard loads, the 1873 definitely "makes a statement" with it's 19th Century design and massive receiver.

I have and use a 20" 73 Uberti Deluxe short rifle and 2 Marlin 94s (19" carbine and 24" Cowboy). The 73 is my usual cowboy rifle and it has been tuned to go fast. It does this using my own 38 cowboy ammo (777 BP sub or Clays smokeless). New ones are expensive (1100+) and hard to find. I waited for over a year and then bought a great used/tuned one for less.

If you want to shoot 357s, especially hot factory loads, the Marlins are a much better choice at half the cost. Marlins are high quality, US made and can be cleaned/maintained much more easily. The current 20" Cowboy model has Ballard rifling and great wood, holds 11-12 rounds and will last forever.

I have 9 Marlins going back to an 1889 made in 1893. They are simply the best lever actions ever made.
