I recently acquired a nice antique 1873 Springfield Trapdoor rifle and now want a carbine. However, carbine antiques in nice condition are hard to find and expensive. So I've been thinking about a replica -- Uberti or Pedersoli -- although I'll continue to look for originals.

I would prefer the one that is most accurate to the orginals. I know the Pedersoli uses not-quite-correct front/rear sights. Does anyone know how the Uberti compares?

Are you sure that Uberti makes Trapdoor??
The only trapdoo replica i know is Pedersoli and Harrington & Richardson, Pedersoli sights is quite correct, the H&R (no more produced) have a dovetail front sight blade and a modern style Lyman rear sight.

This is my H&R carbine with a Pedersoli rear sight and a modified front sight (higher)
The original have a door in butt plate for cleaning kit, the copy doesn't have it.
The stock shape is first issue, also know like "Custer stock", lock plate and hammer are simply black and not case hardened:)
Be carefully in reloading, keep low the black powder charge, the recoil of this small carbine with a full load 45/70 and a 500 grain bullet is severe, i shot the Lee 405 grains hollow base with 55-57 grains of FFg.

I have the H&R officers model with the tang sight, its a very basic sight but rifle does shoot nice.
