In another thread we were about to spin off topic -
-so I decided to make a new thread dealing with the Ugly Annealer, and some mods I made to allow it to work with 7.62x54R.
Before I purchased the annealer, I spoke with the US dealer. He indicated that sometimes rimmed cases can cause some hiccups in the Ugly Annealer. He suggested only loading 10 or 15 cases at a time.
Here's a pic of the annealer in stock trim -
And here's a pic of the problem area -
Just to the left of the feed wheel can be seen a slot, an open slot between the left feed tray and the back wall that holds the cases.
The feed wheel turns counter-clockwise, which pushes the rim directly into that slot.
The rimmed cases tend to, well... Rim lock in that slot, which brings the entire train to a screeching halt. More cases jam against the rim-locked case, and things get bad in a hurry.
To make matters worse, the height of the clear retainer wall in front prevents me from reaching in to clear the jam. I have to stop everything, shut off the torch, empty and reload the case holder.
I've adjusted, slowed, sped up, even tried magic words. The annealer just occasionally chokes on the rimmed cartridge.
Here's my fix. This is temporary, until I can figure out a way to make this out of steel or aluminum sheet, and screw it to the back wall.
I adjusted the left feed ramp over to the left about an eighth of an inch, and covered the slot with a piece of thin cardboard. It's folded under the ramp also, and taped in place.
To cure the problem of stacking the rimmed cases in the holder in the first place, I hacked on a piece of Plexiglass I had left over from another project.
I can now reach in and stack the rimmed cartridges cleanly.
The curved cut on the right could stand to be trimmed down another inch or so, but for now, the annealer is working perfectly.
Annealing brass worthwhile?
I kinda think that people will argue back and forth with zero focus on how it apples to the OP. Jumping out of a plane arguing about which goggles are best and forgot the parachute.... Really? In a thread about annealing? Astonishing!
