I have been on the hunt for a beginner's shot gun for my daughter. She will be 10 early next year and has been looking forward to shooting at the birds that we have been hunting together. She tried my youth model binelli nova which was way to large for her. In my search I have run across what I thought would be a perfect fit, due to her size 510 Mini Bantam (see http://www.mossberg.com/product/shotguns-pump-action-510-mini-super-bantam-all-purpose/50490 ).

I like the shorter barrel (less weight) and the redesigned "growth with me" stock, and the smaller reciever (instead of a 20 ga. on a 12 ga. frame) but I really wish it was a semi-auto, as I with the reduced weight I really want to avoid her getting hammered by the ammo she is shooting.

So anyone know of a mini bantam like gas operated semi auto?

Suggestions?

However I really wanted to

Budget?...
The 1st one the pops to mind is maybe a Franchi AL 48 and then there is the Remington 1100 LT in 20 gage that might do for your daughter.

you could get a Mossberg flex with collapsible stock. Or put a collapsible stock on a 870 or Mossberg 500. Then it will grow with her. I think advanced technology makes an akita adjustable stock with a decent recoil system. Look into Mossberg 590 and I forget what the semi-auto version is.

A good fit is the most important thing in selecting a youth shotgun. It is more important than getting a semiautomatic vs. a manual loading gun.

If the Bantam is the best fit for your daughter, then buy it. Just my 2 cents.

when i was a kid, my dad got me a Remington 1100 LT-20 that had an 18" barrel...that thing was awesome. I remember it being far smaller and easier to shoot than his 12ga 1100 magnum

Yes, the Mossberg youth guns are made in several models. They all have the shim system so the young shooter won't out grow the gun as fast. I would look at the 20 ga youth deer/field combo. The deer/field combo comes with a ventilated rib field barrel and a rifled slug barrel that will fit a full size 500C. The combo runs about the same price as an 870 youth model with just one barrel.

Mossberg puts the same bantam stock on their semi auto's. If you don't want a Mossberg I would look at a Weatherby.

When my kids were little and I was teaching them to shoot shotguns I took my dad's old rem.1100 20 ga and had a friend of mine cut 3 inches off the stock and put on a slip on recoil pad over the cut. They used it that way until they got big enough for a adult stock. Then I took the piece that I cut off and glued it back on and placed the same slip on pad back on it to cover the scar. Now my kids were pretty large for their age and this worked for them may be a solution for others.

The youth size 20's will fit a small shooter better, but the pumps kick like a mule. My wife is very small, and had been shooting an 870 youth 20ga. It would leave bruises after a box of 7/8 oz target loads, and welts after just a few 3" waterfowl loads. Last year she switched to a 12ga with a shortened LOP, and can shoot several boxes of shells in an afternoon in comfort.

Look around the used market for a Beretta 390 synthetic-stocked 20-gauge. Wal-Mart used to sell them for $500, but like most good things in life, they're now discontinued. It's a super-rugged autoloader that has a spacer in the stock that you remove to make it youth-sized. It's a great all-around shotgun. See what's out there.
