I've decided to give in and pick up a WASR-10. While I'm waiting for the next gun show, I thought I would pick up an Ultimak rail, but I see on their website that they have two versions. One for gas tubes with side gas port holes and one without. Does anyone know which one goes with the WASR?

Either would work. The gas block already has holes, so you dont need one with it, but it wont hurt anything to have extra holes.

If you havent done so, I'd suggest at least looking at some of the optics that use the side rail. They are a lot cheaper for similar quality, and they return to zero when removed.

I have one on my SAR1 and I have the Ultimak without the holes. Neither of the tubes on my WASR or SAR have holes.

You dont need to remove the Utimak to clean your gun, so the zero thing is really a non issue. If you go the red dot route, you may or may not be able to co-witness your iron sights. It depends on your sight and how its mounted. You want the lowest rings you can find, or else get a QD type mount or rings.

The forward mounted optics on the Ultimak have it over the rear mounted/side mounted stuff by a long shot. If you get one I dont think you'll be disappointed.

I'm not trying to diss anyone here as I am a HUGE fan of the AK's....in fact there are 2 VEPRs in my future....

but the Ultimak may not be the best way to go. To properly clean the AK the gas tube will eventually have to be removed....besides grab your gas tube firmly, now wiggle it around a bit, it likely will move slightly and more so once it becomes hot. Ultimak is expensive and will loose zero (for most AKs I have seen).

You may want to look at the www.scoutscopes.com as they have a base that will retain zero even after the scope is removed and re-attached.

I have two AK's with the Ultimak on them. I have yet to have one come loose or cause the optics to lose zero. The Ultimak is attached to the barrel, not clamped on like the upper handguard/gas tube. Its rock solid if installed properly.

You can still clean the tube with patches and you can clean the port with one of the long AR gas tube pipe cleaners if you feel the need. I have yet to have any trouble with with the port being fouled shut, and I have a good number of rounds through both guns.

I have an Aimpoint on a Larue lever mount, and a Burris Scout scope on ARMS #22 lever rings I use on my AK103K. I can swap between them with no loss of zero with either and they have been swapped repeatably.

As AK103K said the cleaning thing isnt that big of an issue. I just like the side mount stuff mainly because its more authentic (which doesnt matter much on a WASR) and it costs less. I got my last kobra, like new for $130. Take off the price of an ultimak and its like paying $30 for the sight itself.

I also take my sights off the guns a lot for whatever reason, but I guess with a QD setup you can do the same thing with an ultimak and not lose zero. When people talk about it losing zero they're talking about removing it from the barrel.

Thank you for the replies. I'm going to take my CompM2 off my slug gun and put it on there. It's in just the regular low Aimpoint ring.
