Once a year, I clean and lube the firing pin assembly on my bolt guns. Normally on my Kimber Montana, but bolt easily unscrews for easy removal. When I tried to remove it today, I encountered a lot of resistance and was only to turn it 1/4 turn or so that then I couldn't get any more rotation. The gun functions fine otherwise.

Any guesses as to how to remove it?

Anyone? If no one is familiar with the kimber Montana the Winchester model 70 is pretty much the same.

On the 84M close the rifles bolt with the firing pin cocked.
Put the safety on half cock so that it holds the firing pin but the bolt can be opened.
Open the bolt.
Push on the bolt release button and remove the bolt.
Hold the bolts locking lug section in one hand and twist the bolt shroud that contains the safety with your other hand counter clockwise.
The firing pin assembly should turn out.
It's held by a spring loaded ball.

Don't push the safety off when the bolt is out of the action or you will have to cock it again using a vise.
