from what I understand, KY law, atleast does not forbade the ownership of a pistol but the purchase of one is illegal under Fed law... its like buying cigarettes... you can smoke, you just can't buy... go figure...

AK law I'm not unp to date on but the Fed law says nothign about a person UNDER the age of 21 but over 18 owning a pistol...

Federal law is that you must be 21 to buy a pistol from an FFL Dealer. A personal transaction or gift is not part of this law i.e. you can buy a gun from a friend or a parent or whomever so long as it is not going through an FFL.

No person may sell, deliver, or otherwise transfer a handgun or ammunition suitable only for a handgun to someone the transferor knows or has reasonable cause to believe is under the age of eighteen. 18 U.S.C. § 922(x)(1).

A federally licensed firearms dealer may not sell any firearm except a shotgun or rifle to any person whom the dealer knows or has reasonable cause to believe is under the age of 21. 18 U.S.C. § 922(b)(1).

So, it is definitely possible, but remember, pistol caliber ammunition falls under this category as well. So you will need help buying ammo too.

Pawn brokers are FFLs if they sell guns legally.

CHECK LOCAL LAWS before making a purchase.

Hereabouts, I can buy, own and carry pre-21 as long as I don't buy from an FFL. Go figure.

If you're old enough to vote, pay taxes, sign legally binding contracts, serve in the armed forces, et cetera, it seems to me you're old enough to enjoy the freedoms of the whole Bill of Rights.

Ask your parent to buy you one would be best way to go. Just be careful you do not conceal carry it or keep it in the vehicle loaded. Always transport it unloaded in the storage box, in case you get your car searched. Once you become 21, get CCW permit.

I don't know about Arkansas law, but here in Colorado I can be given a pistol as a gift, buy one from a non-FFL (and anybody selling guns from a storefront will have an FFL), or buy a cap-and-ball pistol from anyone. Getting one as a gift is the easiest method.

Once you have it, you can possess it (as long as you're 18). In Colorado, you can also carry it openly, and carry it open or concealed in your car. Technically, you can't buy ammunition for it until you're 21, but (aside from WalMart) i've never had a store ask for my ID, much less refuse me a sale because I'm underage.

In Indiana, you can get a CCW at age 18 as well. Again, I don't know about Arkansas.

Here in Indiana, you can get your handgun permit at 18. I'll be buying my son his choice next feb.as a gift.

Buy a '58 Remington replica from Cabelas. It's not a firearm according to the Feds :D

And then pick up a .45 Long Colt conversion cylinder from R&D Gun Shop (5728 E County RD X, Beloit, WI 53511-9546). Poof! A big ol' centerfire pistol that's still not legally a 'firearm.'

Uh, MakDaddy, unless the law has changed recently, it is NOT illegal for someone under 21 to possess a handgun in AL. I've seen a 20-year old with a CCW permit in Birmingham.

We are able to own high powered rifles at 18, but supposedly handguns are extra evil, so we have to wait another few years.

At least to buy from a FFL dealer. :D
