It's early morning, and I'm in the living room watching cartoons with my kids when an old "Under Dog" episode comes on. It opens with our hero swooping in and thwarting a bank robbery. The robbers start shooting at Under Dog and they're using full-auto Thompson SMG's with drum & stick mags, and changing the mags when they 'run out'. The chief bad guy is a wolf with a 1911.

The guns were so well drawn it was surprising, right down to the hammer on the 1911 and the vent ribs on the Thompson's. I was excited to see it, but then felt sad that you probably couldn't get something like that past the censors these days.

Anyone else have a classic realistic-guns-in-cartoons moment?

I hear some of the Japanimation stuff is very realistic, but that's not classic cartoons. The Phantom always carries a brace of 1911s, usually well drawn.

The name of the wolf is Riff-Raff. His cigar wouldn't get by the PC crowd today either.

The characterization of Riff-Raff was inspired by actor George Raft who often portrayed tough-guys and gangsters in film-noir. Supposedly Raft actually had Mob connections and was once banned from entering the UK because of this.
