Well, regarding our converstation this afternoon, I think we can agree on the following:
1. Any dictator, in order to achieve power, must eliminate any opposition.
2. To eliminate this opposition, he must reduce and remove the availability of arms from everyone but his loyal police and military. (As when an English king outlawed the English Longbow since it would penetrate a knight's armor, and when the Pope "outlawed" crossbows.)
3. To reduce and remove the availability of arms, he usually must proceed in gradual steps.
4. These steps involve registration, permitting, and other restrictions of arms capable of opposing his regime in various ways. This includes "demonizing" those who would own arms for whatever purpose, whether they "need" them or not.
5. Registration, permitting, and other restrictions ultimately (proven throughout history) result in the confiscation of arms.
6. Step 5 finally allows Step 1 to be accomplished.
