i have one,,,they aint the greatest guns but have had only minor ejection issues using cheep ammo that gummed it up quick...it shot fairly accurate with open sights ..the trigger however is really crappy if your use to a 2 stage AR match trigger and still crappy if your use to crappy triggers,,,only gave 300 for mine so it was worth it

i cant really give you a whole lot of info on account i bought mine to resale..i would say if you paid about 400 for one u could at least get your money back if you dont like it..if i liked the M1 i would probably keep it as it has worked fine for the 100 rounds i fired threw and it was used before i got it..i bought it cheap because the guy wanted new jeep parts...i probably wouldnt have gave more than 3 but if you want one i would say your safe at 400 depending on condition

what are you wanting it for...if your wanting a cheap shooter go with the sks..with a set of ati stock those things look sweet.,,but then again im more of a modern gun kinda guy..but also like taking older guns and modernizing them...that was the plan with the M1..thought it would make a nice bullpup..unfortunantly i couldnt find a bullpup stock for it

I've heard the early models are fine its the later ones u have to watch.......but I haven't found a. Solid date a before. & after ...buy before ....don't buy after date.

that i have not heard but i havnt done that much research into it..i will let a more experienced M1 owner handle that one..sorry i couldnt help more

I'm just wanting a plinker BUT it has to be reliable ...I can not stand ANY gun that won't work the way it should....even for plinking.....and I may put an ATI pistol grip stock on it.

my cheap norinco sks has been the most reliable assault rifle i have..even more than the AR..i would grabe it first if i had a choice and at less than 6 bucks a box of 20..its a pretty cheap shooter...an unmodified one(basic sks with wood stocks) can be had for under 350 depending on where you are at...its at least as accurate maybe better and will be able to take longer shots...also if u want to hunt with it i wouldnt be afraid to

o..and there are tons of aftermarket parts as far as stocks, scope mounts, and other odds and ends...its a pretty common gun

just seen your from alabama not sure about what one goes for there but they can be had on gunbroker for around 300..here in southern indiana can be had all day from 250-300..in florida they are way high..350 for a rusty piece of junk and up to 500 for a good one..but that all i know as far as price compared to area

Some are good, some are bad- you will probably be OK. My best advice is to make sure that the extractor securely catches the case rim and that the round chambers fully with the bolt locked before you do the first few trigger pulls. A customer of mine had a kaboom that blew out the mag floor plate because the jammed extractor wouldn't allow battery. Might be a one-off event or it may be common- Don't know... I didn't own my Universal very long though.. just didn't stack up to the real thing for me.

I have a universal. It was a deal I couldn't pass up. The guy said it didn't eject rounds. I talked him down to $200 with 2 mags and some ammo. Got home and ordered an extractor and spring (<$10), changed it in 10 min. It shoots good and has been reliable so far (5 years). It is one of the most fun rifles I have.

I took a 250+ lbs hog with some hand loads. Neck shot from about 50 yards. It dropped where it stood.

I do have one problem that I have not been able to fix yet. The bolt catch lever is missing a spring and I can't figure out how to remove it to install a new one. Any one has any info? Don't mean to highjack the thread, it just seemed like a good time to throw it out there!:D

redhead have u tried youtube..sometime you can get a video of breakdowns on ther..not sure if there is one for the M1 but there are lots

400 aint bad...they usually go 500..at worst you buy it, hate it and sell it for no mor than a 50 dollar loss...thats up to you though

lol..of coarse...i would love to help but have not broken that part down either...i would suggest calling or going to see a gunsmith for his advice..im assuming you already googled the heck out of it..if not you can try but its sometimes a headache

also try posting a new thread with your particular question..if they see your particular question someone may be willing to help out

I would say around 300. I did some work up loads with several bullet including some 90 gr hornady xtp hollow points. Even they fed great and shot about 2.5 inches at 50 yards. I don't know how much of that is the buck horn sights with eyes that are not as good as they used to be.

They're ok if you accept them for what they are. Pass your weighted catfishing line through the trigger guard, and when Ole' Cruncher picks up the bait, he won't feel the line passing, and you'll be able to whip the rod and set the hook real well, with a little practice.

For Pete's sake, don't expect the gun to actually work. But used as I describe, and it's quite useful.

I was of the impression that there were three or four distinguishable generations of Universal M1 carbines, with some being better than others. Dang if I can recall, tho, how to tell them apart.
