This is a gunshow treasure from last Saturday. It is a put together rifle as the stock is a replacement an the trigger guard is from a different rifle. It all fits together but not perfectly. All the parts are in excellent overall condition, thus the reason for getting it.

What I know: The action is the same as the Model 1919 Match rifle, but this is not a match rifle, wrong markings and sights. It has no model number or serial number. The stock and but plate have a serial number in the 11,000 range.
I have not been able to find any online reference to vintage Savage rifles, though I know this integral action was used on several different models.

Cool find. Hope it shoots well for you. My LGS has a gun smiths special 22 for 60 bucks. Firing pin is broke. And the stock is homemade. Fit is terrible on it. Even the butt plate is to big for it.

I have a model 23 Savage in .32-20 WCF caliber. From your title and the length of the action, I presume it to be a .22 long rifle caliber.

That rifle was chambered in .22 long rifle. Consider also the strength of the rifle is contained in the barrel, bolt and barrel to bolt lock up. The bottom plate fitting a bit loose or goofy is NOT going to compromise the barrel or bolt. (Might pinch or 'bite' your forward hand if you're not careful, but shouldn't blow for that reason.)

You might even foray into stock making and fit that goofy floor plate into fitting correctly. Or just check around and find the correct one.

Natman, thanks for that link. There's a lot to learn there. I have been having trouble finding information in one place covering these older Savage rifles.
I have learned there is a Model 22 also and it has a serial number where the 23a does not. Mine has a serial number, now that I know where to look. It's on the back, rim, of the receiver. You have to look for it to find it.
The stock is very nice, but not inletted for the trigger guard. I am wondering what model it's from. At some time in the past a previous owner added some lead weight to the forend. I am going to leave it.
So, if a Model 22 then it is essentially a sporter version of the Model 1919. And I really like my 1919.

Archie, I did find what looks to be the correct floor plate on Gun Parts, I passed on ordering it for now as it's a bit costly. This one really only fits really bad behind the trigger guard. That may be fixable.

On the way back from the show where I bought it I got to thinking that I really need to narrow my wonky old .22 collecting down to something manageable. I think old Savages is going to be it.
Now I need to locate any books on these rifles.

Ken
