Good Afternoon all, I just bought my first gun this summer and I already have 3 more!!! I LIKE this.

Was wondering if anyone knows an unmanned range in the Saint Louis, MO area. I found one that has no fees and no rules about an hour and half away but was thinking maybe there was something closer.

Also: I'm on a university campus that to my chagrin doesn't allow carrying (even though I have the CCW)... can I keep my guns in my car on campus?

Thanks for the insight! I Love the forum.

-Buying some high cap mags tomorrow b/c of yesterday.

I am assuming you are talking about Riefsnider Park...the closest thing that fits you bill is Piasa Rifle and Pistol in Alton, it is open 24/7 to member s and membership is cheap..downfalls are you have to go into Illinois by a couple block's, it is a 50 foot pistol range with 15 setups..and the only rifles you can shoot are 22's..but it is a good place to get in practice all year round..i use it...

What's the range that you found 30 minutes away?

IANAL. But according to my understanding of MO law, you can keep a firearm in your vehicle, even on a college campus (or any other school campus), and legally no one can do a thing to you.

That being said, you should check your school's student handbook to find out if they have any rules about guns in cars. It may not be illegal, but that doesn't mean that they can't expel you for breaking their rules. So its your call and you must assume the risk of any academic consequences. Also, you might want to check your car insurance and/or renter's insurance policy to make sure that it covers your guns if they are stolen from your car, or if your car itself is stolen.

Either way, if you decide to keep them in your car, keep them out of view, locked in a case of some kind that cannot be removed from the vehicle, and keep your mouth shut.

Why do you want an unmanned range?

Henges off I-44 is a really good range, and only $3/hour. Yes its limited to what you can shoot at, but I find it a good place to go.

Found the name of the unmanned and zero fee range up north west of STL.

"Pleasant Hope"

Great range. I just wish it was closer to STL.

Thanks for the Henges recommendation. I think I'll go check it out!

I don't know what kind of shooter you are, but if you're going to check out Henges, be prepared to wait.

All those gosh darn hunters are out there zeroing their rifles, which causes a nice wait.

Wednesday I went with my dad around 1 in the afternoon, and the place was packed.

Went Thursday morning with my brother, got there just after it opened, and it was packed.

Can't imagine what the weekends are like.

no fees and no rules

I don't know about St Louis, but around here that equals a gravel pit and a nervous visit if there is some mall ninja out blasting away in all directions. Scary.

can I keep my guns in my car on campus?

That is an opportunity to arm a criminal. There are lots of guns stolen out of parked cars.
Many people buy cheap guns they can afford to have stolen with no thought about what the thief might do with them.

Jim, very good point. I definitely won't be keeping my sig in my car anymore. Thanks.

I've got a freind's house and a safe that will do just fine for now until I get my own place out of college.

Thanks for the word on Henges too! Waiting at the range is the worst.

I like unmanned ranges much more than manned b/c I don't have to pay to shoot my firearms and can fire my SKS faster than 1 round every 3 seconds. Not to mention I don't need to buy targets. I like to use Milk Jugs with water and recover different ammo types. Anyone had any experience with the EFMJ by Federal? That's what I carry currently.

Have a good one and thanks for your responses!

Chris

Ah, but that's the beauty of Henges. You don't have to buy your own targets, they provide them.

Yes, you can only do 1 shot per 3 seconds, and you can only shoot paper, but its a safe range that doesn't tolerate idiots.

It boggles my mind that unmanned public ranges even exist.
