Thinking about moving to North Carloina from Missouri...

Industrial robotics, millwright, etc. You should find it relatively easy to find a job. Especially in SC.

Taxes are definitely better in SC.

Good luck!

The Drivers Licenses check point stops in my opinion are now more or less used as a NCHP learning tool for new officers. These are less nettlesome then they were when first initiated with multiple agencies participating together in one stop. The usage of such stops has diminished at least in my area of residence.

As others have mentioned open carry in NC fraught with complications dependent one your area of residence.

As for the criticism of gun shows the older I get the less inclined I am to attend one.

As for “Southern Gun Culture” its dependent on with those that you choose to associate with.

When I moved from VT to NC, I was similarly displeased. I'm originally from NY, so it was still an improvement, but it struck me as impoverished and generally shabby. It's not terrible, depending on where you go, but I did not like it and moved away after about six months in pursuit of another opportunity on the KS/MO line, and loved it by comparison.

NC gun culture is a bunch of by-god-we're-southerners and not a lot of competence, by and large, and the "gunshows" are atrocious.

Also in rural areas, the drivers-license checks are outright Boss Hawg and his boys fourth-amendment rage-inducing pains in the ass.

One should use discretion believing most of this post. There are regional differences in NC, but we are far from the stereotyped impoverished, shabby rednecks many wish to portray. License checks have never been an issue for me or any of my friends that carry.

Where in NC are you guys going? I've lived here my whole life and have never run into the things some of you speak of. "Shabby"? Most of the area I live in is small towns connected by two lane roads where most of the business is small, family owned/operated businesses. Maybe that's what you mean by "shabby"? To each his own I guess, but I'll never live in a city as long as I can help it. I like being able to walk out into my back yard and squeeze off a few rounds, without worrying if my neighbors are going to call it in. It's more likely to end in my neighbor walking over and asking what new toy I just got. I love the small town/country feel. I don't have a huge salary, and honestly...prefer it. I really don't care that I have to drive an hour to get to the nearest "mall".

As for license checks on the road....I've been stopped at maybe 5 in the 15 years I've been driving...and every one of them, I knew the officer...shared a quick "How's it going bud?" and moved on. Stopped me for all of 30 seconds. Most of the ones I see are after holidays or college football games...and it's typically to look for drunk drivers, which I'm all for.

Not to mention we have the best BBQ here...now that's an important issue...

I found myself agreeing with everything you said, right up to this. Actually, we have the best BBQ. :D

I'm retired and have lived on the coast in NC for the last 10 years. I'm surrounded by Navy and Marine bases. It appears that all new police and troopers are vets.

Unfortunately, I've met too many of them in our all-too-common "registration checks". They seem to get a lot of drunk drivers and folks without driver licenses, which is a good thing, but it sure smacks of the police state thing to me. It doesn't take a lot of imagination to see house-to-house searches with blue helmets here.

There are few tech type jobs in the state outside of the Raleigh/University area. Of course the traffic there is horrendous. Most of the labor jobs in my area are filled by Latinos, Blacks seem to be mostly unemployed. Northerners have skewed the real estate prices bigtime. High taxes. Super high gas prices.

On the plus side, we have gun shows with private sales. With the shootings at the last one, however, http://www.wral.com/private-gun-sal...r-three-hurt-in-accidental-shooting/12000843/, my guess is it will be all FFL in the near future.

BarBQue: Folks here tear it apart with their hands, and then pour vinegar on it.

Texas has the best up around Austin. Trust me, I'm a doctor.

Not sure how being a Dr. qualifies one to be a BBQ critic, but I've tried that Texas BBQ and would still wager on the Lexington meat! :)

I'm most troubled by this handgun permit thing. I wasn't aware of it til recently but apparently my unregistered .357 is illegal here without a permit issued by the sheriff's office.

Someone has lied to you. A permit is only required for purchase, not possession. By law the man who purchased from you must have a pistol purchase permit or CHP, and if he did not then you broke the law and shouldn't talk about it anymore.

OP: you would likely have better luck asking your question in a state-specific forum, such as Carolina Shooters Club

There are significant variations all across any state. Visit as many different areas as you can before deciding whether to move or not. Your quest for cheap land may take you to some more economically depressed areas that won't supply you with adequate employment opportunities.

I live in NC on the border of NC TN and VA,and have stood in all three states at once many times, and having spent ample time on the coast of SC, IF I have any say in it Ill die right here in NC.
If you want to millright, Most of my friends do, you will want to look into unemployment laws more than sales taxes. also where I am the sales tax is 6 percent. unemployment is 535.00. a week if you are maxed out and if you work for duke energy, Flora daniel, or progressive energy you would be, and you can work 6 months and draw for biggest part of the other 6 months if you plan. You could get a millright job for those any time as our unemployment rate is skewered by raleigh and charlotte.
Watch how far east you go if you want to hunt with a rifle, it is restricted in some places. NC has a long deer season and you can kill unlimited does. also a sportsmans liscense in NC to hunt and fish is 40.00 50.00 in SC, 133.00 in VA and140.00 in Tn. As far as cost of living TN is pretty good as it has no state tax coming out of your check, but the sales tax is stupid high and the unemployment is probably among the lowest in the US at 275.00 WK so thats no good for a millright unless you get a side job for a week or two just to get a w2 in NC or somewhere like that so you can draw in that state. ask around especially amongst millrights as they have a lot of ways to make that job better.
My only problem with VA is the vehicle laws. They are close to communist on what you drive, lol

Also if you want the good bbq go to the mountains Mikes BBQ in MTn city tn, or Woodlands in blowing rock NC. I made the mistake of ordering "BBQ" on the eastern part of NC once, Im pretty sure they finely sliced up the pig and drug it through some vinegar and called it good.lol

Lexington BBQ...too many tomatoes! hehe...My pulled pork needs no tomatoes...just a splash of spiced up vinegar after smoking over some oak or hickory (I prefer oak), is all you need. Now, with that said...I do use more of a lexington style sauce on my chicken. It's got tomato in it and some sugar to balance out the heat. Thighs over applewood and finished with a lexington/western NC style sauce....mmmm...I think I know what's for dinner tomorrow.

BBQ joints that drown the meat in vinegar are doing it wrong. You want just a splash of it to cut through the richness of the fat and smoke...too many places completely destroy the flavor of the meat itself...a shame really...when done right, it's the best...put it on a bun with some sweet slaw and ...win...

Sounds like your in my neck of the woods, and maybe went to the same college as myself as I have an A.A.S. in electronics from jeffco. Small world.

The bad things are: permit required to purchase handguns, no carry in establishments that serve alcohol, and no carry in places that charge for admission. A concealed carry permit makes the first one moot, and hopefully the other 2 will be taken care of this year.

Also, even though open carry is technically legal, there is a law on the books called "going armed to the terror of the public" that is open to interpretation by law enforcement.

Where I live in eastern NC is pretty gun friendly. But there are certainly some areas/counties that are less so.

The hunting laws vary greatly by region and county, I suggest you look at ncwildlife.org to see how the laws are in a specific area. Also depending on where you end up, there are public game lands that you can hunt.

Despite what was said before, NC has a several really good colleges, should you decide to further your education down the road. Tuition rates are decent(though they do go up every year). The UNC system of schools (UNC, NC State, UNCG, UNCW, ECU, etc.) are all very good schools, and private schools include Duke, Wake Forest, and a bunch of smaller colleges and universities.

Good prices can be found on land, around here at least. Not sure about the western part of the state.

Sales taxes can also vary by location, but for the vast majority is 6.75 or 7 %
http://www.dor.state.nc.us/taxes/sales/salesrates_4-12.html

Gas prices are high, partly because the state has a 37.5 cents per gallon tax. It usually stays at or below the national average though.

Overall it's not a bad place to live.

And TarDevil, Them's fightin words talkin about a Man's BBQ like that! :D

I'm with ya buddy. Maybe not a whole hour out, but close that way.

I'm not looking into unemployment, period. I'm not looking to be a millwright. I was just using that to give a description of the capabilities.

My degree can have me working in robotics, automation, hydraulics, all things PLC, all things electronics.. industrial maintenance, utilities and communications etc. I have a I.T. background, and just want something stable, modest and where I am not sitting at a desk until I'm near retirement.

I'll be right at 30 when I graduate, and I've had a career before that was filled with contract work and unemployment. No thanks.

I am not ok with permits, or registration.

I am wanting to know more about SC vs NC. My wife is fond of Greenville, SC I believe it is, and is not too far from my mother in Gastonia.
