A friend of mine gave me some surplus 7.62NATO rounds that have no makers mark, actually its only stamped "7.62mm", no Nato, no X51, and no head stamp. the box they came in is tan in color and has no markings either. they are brass cased, annealed necks, FMJ bullet and Beredan primed with a red lacquer over the primer. Any Ideas on where its from? Another friend speculated it was for covert ops that required no evidence at the scene.

Thats what we thought too, he has a case marked 7.62X39 that is clearly a .308 case witch is what raised the hypothesis

That's just silly.

ANY spent shell casing at a crime scene is excellent evidence. The boltface and extractor always leave unique marks which are far better than rifling-marks for the purpose of tying the casing to a particular gun.

A UNIQUE headstamp (i.e. absence of markings) is every bit as much an identifying mark as if it said CIA or KGB on the case.

The spent case would contain gunpowder residue. Almost all Gunpowders all have taggants added to the powder, so it can be identified which manufacturer produced the powder. Even ball-point pens use taggants. Absence of a taggant would dramatically narrow the list of suspects.

Even in the absence of taggants, a gas chromatograph would provide a chemical "picture" of the gunpowder, such that if a second casing, lacking a heastamp, and with the same breechface marks, and containing the same very unique chemical picture, and absence of taggant, would ring the bell as to identifying that the second casing came from the same gun as the first.

All this James Bond stuff is very real, and in play today. Well, unless you are dealing with insurgents, who will probably identify the shooter by his feces.

or a bulk run by any of the 100+ countries that use .308 (if that's what it is, cause there are a number of 7.62's out there)

check the case head for the NATO cross
as for spook ammo, they probably use brown bear or the equivalent, cause there's lots and lots and LOTS of spare ammo out there so it's NOT a smoking gun, hell WE, the US made and contracted to make the ammo for Iraq and Afghanistan, does that mean any firefight they get in will be construed as a 'US' operation based on the shell casings?

A blank 'spook' case would be more of a red light than a marked case.

I know all of my Sellier & Bellot has the red sealant on the primers regardless of caliber.
Do the Czechs use the FAL?

could also be a custom run by BB or someone using generic brass
but it's probably military surplus, since it's sealed.

on another forum it is speculated to be Yugo, the red sealer and 15 rds to a box in the givaway
