Unuasual 686 all comped out

Don't have a picture but, it is a 686, 6in, ported along the top of the barrel in a set of 5 or six (I think) round holes, has excellent trigger work, and get this, has the serial number roll marked out in a pattern that looks like checkering in a way. Is this a custom shop wonder or does it sound like some smith built it?
