Unusual Glock 17 failure

Hmmmm... There's certainly no stress on that part of the gun from firing. I wonder if something was attached to the accessory rail when it broke.

It will be interesting when they determine the cause. I can't think of any way to have one snap like that unless it was a manufacturing defect.

Looks like it would have made it a couple mags at least after the failure. Anyone see anything that would stop the gun?

I tend to wonder...

did someone remove the slide and take a sledgehammer to the frame?

It says "after the 2nd round" What the hell were they firing, necked down 20mm?

(in all seriousness, I'd say there was probably an existing stress fracture in the frame / manufacturing defect.. )

I've never seen that. It does look like the gun would still function should that happen at the worst possible time.

Glocks have had trouble with frame cracks in that general area before (though this one is really bad).

I surely wouldn't want to bet my life on it continuing to shoot. Would you?

With the captive FLGR it should continue to function OK BUT I wouldn't want to bet my life on it :) You may lose some accuracy as the frame contacts the slide at the front to improve lockup consistancy and, of course, you wouldn't have anything to keep the dust out ;)

If it were dropped with a light attached I could see where it could have wrenched it pretty good there, but still, it should have held so there was probably a defect somewhere.

Wow. I have handled a couple of exploded Glocks, but nothing like that. Also saw a G26 new from the factory with an incompletely milled feed ramp.

Either Glock is having problems with the machinery that molds frames and this is the beginning of another "secret recall" or El Tejon is correct.

Occam's Razor suggests the El Tejon option.

Dropped? It looks like the frame was used as a prybar to get a car door open. I wonder if that was newly issued. In other words it went directly from the shipping container to the armorer to the officer with no stops in between. I've seen officers do some crazy things with their guns. I'd be very interested in seeing what Glock has to say about this.

my G17 is an old one that i got used. i thought then and still do that it is one ugly gun. i fired many rounds thru it upon purchase and have fired countless rounds since then. functions flawlessly. i dont "love" this gun, but admire the reliability of it and my little G26. hope not to use either, but if i do, i will have full confidence when i touch them off. that is of utmost importance. if one of these ever blew up or started jamming, i would put them away and never use them again.
