Oregon members: SB 335 to restrict CHL

From http://www.oregonfirearms.org/alert.html :

GUN BAN HEARING SCHEDULED
As we predicted, Ginny Burdick has scheduled hearings on her gun ban bill at the Multnomah County Courthouse.
As you know, this bill (Senate Bill 335) would make you a criminal if you happened to show up at the same place where school children had gathered for a "field trip."
The hearing is scheduled to start at 8:30 on Friday Jan. 28th.
The exact location is listed below.
The hearing will be held at the courthouse to dissuade as many CHL holders as possible from coming, since they will be prohibited from entering the building if they are in possession of their legally carried firearms.
We fully expect this to be a dog and pony show for the media, with the supporters of the bill getting the most favorable treatment.

In this case the committee you will want to watch is "Judiciary."
If you intend to go to the hearing and testify, make sure you look for a sign up sheet when you enter the room.
Also, be advised that Burdick would almost certainly NOT have scheduled the hearing unless she had a promise from the other Democrats on the committee that the bill would pass out of committee. So any testimony you plan to give will be for the benefit of the media only.
Once again, the members of the committee are:

Ginny Burdick, Chair (The sponsor of the bill, although it will appear as "Sponsored By the Judiciary Committee) 503-986-1718
Charles Starr, Vice-Chair (A reliable pro-gun vote) 503-986-1713
Roger Beyer (A strong supporter of gun rights.) 503-986-1709
Floyd Prozanski (A militant anti-gun extremist) 503-986-1704
Charlie Ringo (A regular anti-gun voter) 503-986-1717
Vicki L Walker (A militant anti-gun extremist) 503-986-1707
Doug Whitsett (A newly elected Republican who answered our survey 100%) 503-986-1728

I called Sen. Starr's office, and the aide I spoke to suggested that it might be beneficial to contact every single member of the committee (by phone, email, or letter) and let them know your opinion of the bill.

The aide I spoke to also suggested it's not a bad idea to contact your local legislator as well, even though the bill hasn't left committee. If your local legislator gets feedback early in the process, they can pass that feedback on to the committee members.

I asked how important it is to provide explanations for why I feel the bill is either bad or good, and he said that it is important to provide some reasons, but it's also important to keep the reasons brief.

Any body in Oregon wishing to get contact information for their legislator can do so by going to http://www.leg.state.or.us/findlegsltr/

The bill being discussed is here: http://oregonfirearms.org/pdfs/LC 1264.pdf

I will be there, as Friday is my day off... usually reserved for shooting but this may be a worthwhile eception.

Will the "public" be allowed to comment or just be there? Never been to one of these before.

thanks

~Brian

I don't have any first hand knowledge of how this meeting will work. The original note from oregeonfirearms.org does remind you to look for a signup sheet if you intend to testify.

I just called Sen. Burdick's office to confirm that they'll be allowing public testimony and they said that the public would be allowed to comment. Hawkmoon gave some advice in a different thread http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=122428 on what we can do to make our time there most effective.

Oh, I forgot to mention-- since I was already on the phone with them (and it was a different aide from yesterday when I talked with that office), I went ahead and provided them with my feedback again.

I've spoken to at least 4 different aides yesterday and today, and it's funny-- the aides for the committee members that are expected to support the bill almost seem afraid to talk to me, that I'll climb through the phone and rip out their throat. The other aides seemed interested in talking to me and in actually being helpful. In each case, I noticed the difference in demeanor even before I told them what I thought about the bill.

Good luck guys. Don't let them get away with this. I spend alot of time in Oregon and would hate for you to end up like us in California.

Scott
