'We shoot them down like the morons they are': US general

By Lindsay Murdoch Herald Correspondent south of Baghdad
April 9 2003, 11:05 AM

Hundreds of Muslim fighters, many of them non-Iraqis, were putting up a stronger fight for Baghdad than Iraq's Republican Guard or the regular army, a top United States military officer said yesterday.

"They stand, they fight, sometimes they run when we engage them," Brigadier-General John Kelly said.

"But often they run into our machine guns and we shoot them down like the morons they are."

General Kelly, assistant commander of the about 20,000-strong 1st Marine Division, said US intelligence indicated that there might be anywhere between 500 and 5000 of the fighters, whom he described as terrorists.

"They appear willing to die. We are trying our best to help them out in that endeavour," he said.

General Kelly said a captured Syrian fighter who had his leg blown off had refused medical help. "They are arrogant. They are determined," he said.

The fighters were armed with AK47 rifles and hand-held rockets, he said.

"We are finding them more dangerous than the conventional Iraqi units."

General Kelly said pockets of the Republican Guard and Iraq's regular army were engaging thousands of US marines who had entered Baghdad from the north-east after seizing control of bridges across the Tigris River.

The resistance was unco-ordinated, he said.

"There's no shifting of forces ... there are no reinforcements ... there is no cohesion to the whole thing."

Any rational military command would have surrendered by now, he said.

"There can be no escape."

General Kelly said marines were about to seize buildings and land in Baghdad that were of strategic importance.

"Once we take ground we tend not to give it up."

"They appear willing to die. We are trying our best to help them out in that endeavour," he said.

Accomodate as many of them as you can, Gen. Kelly

And thanks to you and yours for the job the troops are doing and the sacrifices made so far in the name of Freedom and Liberty.

General Kelly needs to have his PIO (Public Information Officer) to speak on his behalf since he is too "insensitive" towards the courageous and determined martyrs of Saddam. Those "manly" (oft used word in many a Civil War memoirs) gallants sell themselves dearly (thankfully so since it makes it easy for our boys and girls) to repel the "infidel" invader of their "sacred soil" (ahem, dirt). Bwahahahahahahaha!

It would seem that we are populating their version of heaven with the "less than bright" version of Iraqi's. I wonder if the 70 virgins have any preference for intellect?...:D

Wow

In this day and age of political promotions for the military, I'm kind of surprised to see a General make a statement like that...cool

"The modern definition of 'racist' is someone who is winning an argument with a liberal."

The current definition of "liberal" is someone who pissed off a redneck by using words he couldn't understand.

Dunno if this thought belongs here, but here goes.

What's with these people? We gots an Iraqi propaganda minister swearing by Allah that the Ami are most certainly NOT in Baghdad, this almost in the shadow of an ACR. I mean, reporters could swivel their heads from his visage to view the GI's outside. We have non-Iraqi fanatic Arabs punching our fists vigorously with their chins. We're being grimly warned that this feat of arms is breeding the next generation of martyrs. Is it possible that an entire ethnic group of people has arisen with no access to the left brain? Sheeesh. These are the folks that preserved most of the useful knowledge of Western Civ during the Dark Ages. They invented modern math and astronomy. What in the bleep HAPPENED to them?????

I believe what happened to them was that they fixed their interpretations of the Qu'ran to favor the least enlightened viewpoint around 800 years ago and they became factionalized.

The Mongols didn't help and neither did the Spanish re-conquest.

Germany was a backward place until recently, with a bright light here and there, because of all the petty states. From the mid-to late 19th C. to the beginning to middle of the 20th C. Germany became one of, if not the most, technologically advanced nations (until we bombed them nearly back into the stone age). Continues to be even to this day, thanks to American money and Volkswagen.

It would seem even with regular and irregular forces, that their battle tactics are suicidal. I mean charging and attacking M1A1 tanks and Bradleys with dump trucks, pick-up trucks and buses full of fighters seems incredibly stupid.

Of course, we do know the Fedayeen Saddam and others are forcing some folks to fight (who apparenlty are not real soldiers) by threatening to kill their families. That might explains some of the bizarre "tactics".

And, some of these foreign fighters are using the same tactics as the Fedayeen by fighting behind women and children.

If we hurry, maybe we could arrange transport from Damascus to Tikrit in time for the main attack there.

I wouldn't want our troops having to search for targets.

Sheeesh. These are the folks that preserved most of the useful knowledge of Western Civ during the Dark Ages. They invented modern math and astronomy. What in the bleep HAPPENED to them?????

What happened to them? One word, RELIGION. That is what casued the Dark Age in Europe and that is what is causing the dark age in the Middle East.

The one good thing Sadam did was to limit the influence of religion in his state. He surpressed religion and his country was better off for it, it had the highest literacy rate of any Arab nation and he kept the radical Musselms in check, lets just hope that we can.:uhoh:

uh, firestar - what caused the dark ages were several things, but among the most relevant were: the bubonic plague, a mini-ice age that started in the 1300's, and a group of rowdy folks called vikings...I'm afraid your antireligion prejudice doesn't stand up to the test of factual history.

In regard to the very direct USMC Brig. Gen. my initial reaction was: get this man a Public Affairs Officer ASAP! (at least that's what the Army calls their PR guys and gals) HOWEVER, my reaction does not seem to be echoed by the Marines, who from what I've heard are eating this er, :cuss: (got that Oleg?) up with a spoon! The only coherent response I've gotten back from them so far was a quote from a WWII Marine commander who when asked what he most needed replied "send more japs". This has now been changed to "send more morons!".

what can you say to that?:D
