Some Volunteer-Fighter Arabs Returning Home, Disillusioned by Jihad in Iraq

Thursday, April 10, 2003

CAIRO, Egypt — It was a phenomenon of Arab brotherhood: From across the Mideast and even farther afield, hundreds of young men made their way to Iraq to fight the U.S. and British "invaders."

But with the fall of Baghdad and the absence of Iraqi leadership, some volunteers are returning home, disillusioned and angry at the failure of their jihad, or holy war.

"We volunteered to defend Baghdad," said Firas Ali Abdullah, who returned to Syria with seven other Syrians and Lebanese on Wednesday. "Instead of giving us weapons to fight, they used us as human shields."

Scores of Arabs traveled to Iraq before and since the start of the war, taking up the banner of jihad against the U.S.-led offensive.

Young and old men gathering at bus stations in Damascus, Syria, or taxi stands in Amman, Jordan, vowed to fight, with suicide attacks if they had to.

But the Arabs expected to join a solid army with firm leadership. With the dissolution of Iraq's government structure, the scattering of the army and the surprising invisibility of even the esteemed Republican Guard, many grew discouraged and disillusioned.

"We were hit by Iraqis from the back and the American troops from the front," Abdullah said.

Arab satellite channel Al-Jazeera reported that even the Iraqis were trying to talk the Arabs into giving up the fight.

Shortly before the war began March 20, Iraqi Vice President Taha Yassin Ramadan announced that thousands of Arab volunteers seeking martyrdom were arriving and more were expected. Iraq's state television later said an estimated 4,000 fighters had arrived.

Abdullah, the Syrian fighter, said he knew of 600 Arab volunteers, including 180 Syrians and 300 Lebanese and Jordanians. He said he was a member of the militant Lebanese group Hezbollah, which he said sent 200 suicide fighters, although the group has denied sending anyone.

Many volunteers remain in Iraq, making up some of the most determined holdouts in the fight against coalition troops. In Baghdad on Thursday, U.S. Marines cleared out two mosques after determining that fighters from other Arab countries were inside, firing on U.S. troops.

At a former Iraqi military compound, eight prisoners knelt in the dirt. U.S. soldiers said they were suspected Islamic militants from France, Algeria, Egypt and Jordan.

In Cairo, the furor for jihad has died down.

On Wednesday, Egyptian TV showed footage of men clamoring to get inside the lawyers' union offices, where they could sign up for jihad. But on Thursday, the office was empty and the man in charge of distributing applications said no volunteers had come since Wednesday afternoon, when televisions aired live footage of Saddam's statue being toppled in Baghdad.

At a shabby coffee shop in downtown Cairo, waiter Ashraf Abu el-Alla seemed resigned to the futility of the volunteers' fight.

"There is no use now. Look at the Iraqi president, he let his people down. Why should Arabs remain there?" he asked.

They were all excited about dying for their cause until they realized that coalition soldiers were more than happy to accommodate them......

Probably a lot more mercenary than they're letting on, wonder if maybe they found out that Sadam couldn't pay up if they blew up?

From what I've read (and I admit I have no first-hand experience in the Middle East) this is not the exception with Arab wars, it is the rule. Maybe someone with more experience could correct this, but from reading a bit of history on the conflicts in Palestine plus fiction by people like Clavell and Uris I've gotten the impression that Arab society tends to foster a kind of pan-Arab inferiority complex that requires men to boast and threaten and roar as much as possible but requires them to "spin" every defeat into a victory, make excuses, and in general refuse to learn anything. This, combined with the constant internecine fighting at all levels of Arab life from the inner family up tends to make them lose wars. A lot.

"We were hit by Iraqis from the back and the American troops from the front," Abdullah said.
Wonder if that's what tipped them off that the Iraqis didn't want their help...?

This is no good. GO BACK TO IRAQ! JIHAD!!! YEEHAA!! ATTACK!!! ALU AKBAR!!!

Damn it. We have a fantastic opportunity here. These retards want to go and fight our troops. How do they plan on fighting? By committing suicide. We have to find ways to encourage this type of behavior. Maybe we could get a small TFL contingent to dress in local garb and run around in the crowd like Michael Palin popping up here and there yelling 'Jihad!' 'Kill the infidel invaders!' and 'where's my belt of C4?'.

If they don't go fight the Marines, they're gonna look for more women and kids to blow up.

GO BACK TO IRAQ! JIHAD!!!

If I remember correctly, when the stuff hit the fan in Afganistan, something like 10,000 Islamic voluteers crossed the border from Pakistan.

The ones able to come back were not happy campers either. Apparently most of those voluteers were from Pakistan.

These Mooselimbs have indicated from the get go that they were not afraid to die. My buddy suggests that we shouldn't be afraid to kill them, and help them attain their ultimate goal.

I'm torn between having them stay, so the USMC helps them enter the gates of "paradise," or having them go home and tell their buddies not to screw with us. Only problem, as has been mentioned, is they'd probably decide that killing women and children is easier. They had better hope we never stoop to their level, since we can kill a whole lot more of their women and children than they can of ours.

Well following some extremely unofficial reports from here and there so far I figure Allied forces have wiped out something in the neighborhood of 50,000 supporters of SH & co. Out of that number somewhere close to 20 percent (10,000) have been fedayeen, Baath party wackos, other "internal security" types, and "volunteers". In other words our guys have cleaned up more arab street trash (both Iraqi and non-Iraqi) in the last few weeks than the collective governments of all arab states have gotten rid of in the last 5 years. That being the case I wish to propose the following:

1. We make it very clear to Syria that because of their opposition to Operation Iraqi Freedom they now have two choices: either our troops continue to advance in their direction OR they immediately get to inherit all remaining "human shields" and another 3000 leftist protestors of our choosing.

2. The next middle eastern country that messes with us gets 6000 leftist protestors, and so on, until either people stop messing with us or we've entirely depopulated San Francisco and Marin County California, as well as portions of the other socialist States associated with the antiamerican 'war protest' movement.

Personally I think with that sort of threat, out folks may never have to fire another shot. :D
