In the 20th century over 170,000,000 citizens were murdered by their own governments.

In the US every year there are around 40,000 firearms deaths. These include accidents, suicides, and justifiable self-defense shootings.

By my calculations, it would take the private citizens of the US, 4250 years to shoot and kill as many people as the victims of genocide in the last century.

If you only count firearms murders (no suicides or good shoots) it would take private US citizens over FIFTEEN THOUSAND years to do what governments like Nazi Germany, USSR, Turkey, Cambodia, Rwanda accomplished in one century.

Only 1/20th of 1 percent of the 80 million US gun owners will use their weapons for murder or suicide.

Only 1/100th of 1 percent of the 80 million US gun owners will use their weapons for murder.

Only 1/250th of 1 percent of the estimated 250 million firearms owned by private US citizens will be used to commit murder.

These are some nice numbers reflecting reality. Remember for the next time some brady drone whines: 'The US is the bloodiest nation in history because of guns!'

That's assuming the various governments end their current and future genocide.

Naw, only about 30,000. (30,242 in 2002, and only 11,829 homicides, according to the CDC at

Yeah I was using old numbers. I went and looked at the FBI Uniform Crime
Reports for 2003 and the number of firearms murders was only 9600. So it looks like crime really is going down.

No, it's assuming that there won't be any more genocide last century.

Which seems like a safe bet.

Rather than quoting statistics (which is where the anti got his/her info from) tell the Brady drone to tour the rest of the world before making such a statement.

Do you happen to have citations on where the statistics came from? Not doubting you, but I wish to use the same comparisons for my own arguments should I come across an anti (if you don't mind) and I like giving credible sources so they can't bitch about my stats being biased.

If you keep using those pesky facts, you might make the anti-firearm groups work much harder...

Keep it up :D

You can get number of firearm deaths from either the CDC reports, or the FBI Uniform Crime Reports. They are issued every year and available for viewing on the government websites.

Do a search on google for the terms "170 million genocide" or "170000000 genocide" and you will come up with a plethora of research papers, websites, and whatnot on the estimated number of genocide victims in the 20th Century. If any leftists doubt you, point them to this site:
http://www.un.org/icc/justice.htm

Even the UN agrees with the general estimate of 170 million.

The rest is just simple math.

If possible, it would be good to compare 100 years of US firearm murders to 100 years of governmentally-sponsored genocide, just for fairness' sake, and for the sake of eliminating another of the enemy's arguments.

Now give are Govt. credit they would like to play. I mean we have Ruby Ridge and Waco and other smaller BATFE abuse were they tested the water. But just to dam many citizens who won't give up their guns. Now once they get around that I sure many will be sent to the showers.

About 12 years ago in Las Vegas I talked to police captain from Chicago and a New York officer about the gun/murder rate in the USA.Time magazine had quoted 20,000 killings in that year. Both officers said a survey of police nation wide had the murder rate close to 100,000 . Chicago had very low murder rate that year the police captain said..
How's that ? I asked
Well a body found in the lake isn't counted or if the body is that of a street person or nobody not counted .Gang members killed are not counted as they are on a special list that the police commissioner has.
So that's how you keep the count low ... yes agreed the New York cop.
When the Chicago officer left the New York LE said Chicago police would see a man stabbed in the hart and the knife still in the body and call that heart stoppage .

I'm betting that this century will be worse than the last.

The century mark is a convenient cut off point for rhetorical purposes.

The numbers are cooked, and unreliable.

Yes the percentage of crime comitted with guns is minimal. But the government want the people to think the opposite. Automobiles, cigarettes and alcohol cause more deaths than guns(people kill people not guns) But the government will not make cigarettes or alcohol illegal because they make a ton of money from it. Thanks for doing your homework
