Apparently lead free non-toxic pistol primers were intro'd in small pistol size.
So .45 ACP and .40 S&W for indoor range are made with small pistol NT primers.
I am not happy about it but I need to be aware.
Both the CCI/Federal lines standarized to SPP "nt" to prevent inadvertent placement of heavy metal primers in NT loads
Its a mechanical failsafe for the humes running the stacks.
Can you tell an NT primer from a toxic one?
Neither can the chutes. But this prevents that problem.
Believe it or not, primers are fed in huge assemblies in ammunition manufacturing at production levels, and even a few heavy metal primers in an NT production run can invalidate a testing run for federally procured ammo in the vent test.
Given that the vent test involves gauging all combustion gasses through a calibrated cartrtidge over 2,000 rds, its easy for a simple failure to invalidate an entire production run.
Its a neat system.
Small pistol primers are more than sufficient for all pistol loads, and the NT variant is plenty hot for all loads if you get em in trays.
You can prime these cases with standatd SPP, its just a manufacturing workaround for specialty rounds.
