used savage without a barrel nut?

So several years ago when I was young and dumb I bought a used semi-custom savage 110L in a pawn shop. It had been rebarreled to 257AI and came with a fancy stock, reloading dies and brass and was a steal. I've enjoyed it over the years and the other day it hit me: This savage has no barrel nut! How have I missed this over the years. The barrel appears to be threaded directly into the receiver like a remington or one of the shaw mkvii rifles.

The only marks are "257AI" on the top and "5 28 69 ES" on the bottom (may 28, 1996 ER Shaw?) Is there any way to figure out what happened to the gun or where? Have they done anything to the receiver to install this thing or could I, if I so desired, buy a savage barrel, nut, and thread a new barrel onto the receiver?

From your picture of the action, it looks like the barrel was fitted to the face of the action. The chamber was finished after the barrel was screwed up tight.
The barrel and nut on the Savage rifles is so headspacecan be set very easly.

If you choose to remove the 257AI barrel all the custom bedding of that barrel will be gone. Any new barrel will not fit the stock right.

I would keep it as is the 257AI is a fine cartridge.

Someone cut the barrel for a custom fit and a flange, set to the correct headspace as most other brands of rifles, similar to the Remington 700 with the spacer. They just eliminated the barrel nut setup. I would think that you could return it to the original setup with another barrel if desired. Is there something wrong with the old barrel?

As jaguarxk120 mentioned, the stock looks custom for that setup, but standard Savage stocks should be easy to get. Don't know about LH versions though.

If you haven't already Go to The savage shooters forum. for two reasons, one to ask the guys there about it, one or more of them may be able to tell you if it's an older ER Shaw build or not, and If you DO decide to rebarrel and or restock this rifle there is a whole list of savage specific aftermarket resources, parts sellers, and gunsmiths linked to and participating in the forum other there. And many of those same "Savage gurus" aren't as prominent on other boards.

We got a reamer for it in 2002 and have done 5 rifles with it.
All are very accurate.
I have killed 4 deer with the 257 Robert Ackley Improved cartridge.
They were all bang -flop.
I zero at 200 yards and adjust 6 moa for 400 yards, it shoots flat.
It might be too overbore for a target cartridge, but it is a great deer cartridge.

I have read about doing a Sav 110 with no nut, and I think I am going to do it, next time.
