Used Taurus 92

I picked up a used Taurus 92 for different project but I've found this used piece is a bit of a scatter-gun.

Out of curiosity, what would it take to regain normal accuracy? Just a barrel swap or is there something else inherent to keeping decent groups?

Before you give up on the barrel, check it out closely. Often barrels on used guns are never cleaned properly and it may just be copper or lead fouled rather than shot out. To get out serious copper fouling a Outers Foul-Out or home made equal works great.

I feel your pain. I just got rid of my 92 for the same reason. I bought it used. It was pretty beat up, but fun to shoot. I never found it to be extremely accurate. As you put it a "scatter gun". At the time I was looking for a cheap 9MM, but now I've got a Sig P226R in 9MM. I can't wait to get the Sig to the range.

Mine is very nicely accurate.


It is quite picky about ammo though, showing much better accuracy with some loads over others.

I had it out at 15yds off the bench and it would just stay on a pie plate.

I had an old Ballestar Molina .45 that put 2 magazines into a fist size hole shortly after.... it was sad... :banghead:

Take a look at the end of the barrel. If there's a ding there, that may cause a problem with accuracy, a simple recrowning the existing barrel would do the trick.

My two were always better than average accurate. Of course I bought both of mine NIB.

I shoot mine slightly more accurately than I do my Beretta 92FS (both bought new). The first place I would start is a serious cleaning of the barrel (more than once actually) .. as was already mentioned. Then go from there.
