I have some RL-15 powder and am reloading 7.62x54r. The problem is that there's very little load data for this powder in this cartridge, and I only found 2 recipes for 150gr bullets.

I plan to load some 174gr bullets, and since the charge weights between 7.62x51 and the 54r are so close for a given poweder, its it ok to use load data for the 7.62x51 in my 54r to get a starting point?

The 54r is a little more stout than the 308, so it should be a little under loaded. I am new to reloading, but I dont see why this should be a problem.

Not sure about that really not sure what i have noticed is powder to bullet weight is on a curve a smaller lite bullet will take more powder when you think it should take less and as the bullet weight goes up charge goes down to a piont then starts to rise if you wait long enough you will get the info you need but if ur like me your at the bench now and want to know NOW.
Good luck and caution

Hornady 7th Edition
7.62x54r
jacketed rounds
150gr. (.311 dia.) w/ RL15
41.6gr. to 46.8gr.
174gr. (.311 dia.) w/ RL15
37.8gr. to 45.6gr.

Lyman 49th ed.
7.62x54r
jacketed rounds
150gr. (.311 dia.) w/RL15
43.5gr. to 48.5gr.
174gr. (.311 dia.) w/RL15
42.0gr. to 47gr.

Be careful under loading RL15. I stuck a bullet in a bore once doing that with that very same powder, in a x54r rifle.

Thanks for the info. This look like a good starting point. I hear a lot about 54r loads in this country being somewhat anemic. The Hornady load of 37.8gr seems like it wouldn't break 2000fps out of my 20" barrel.

How was your luck with the RL15 in the 54r?

No not really. Only time I had good results with RL15 was loading the bullets long in the cases.

For 150 thru 180gr bullets my powders of choice are either H4895, IMR4895, IMR4350, or AA4350.

Really like the 4350's with the 180gr bullets.
