Using machine grease as a rust inhibitor

Today I was going to buy some RIG grease to fill some pits with, but I decided not to because I have access to a bunch of grease, you know, grease grease. The kind they use on machinery I suppose. Would it work to inhibit rust? After all, the working parts of a lot of guns are coated in grease.

Grease grease huh? That made me laugh.

Most generic automotive - machine - bearing greases have some level of corrosion inhibitors. What level kinda depends on what kind of "grease grease" we're talking about. Got a brand name and item number... you can look the properties of the grease up on-line.

Rig can last for years. My friend polished his 10/22 to a bright white. He applied three coats of RIG, buffing in after each application. After over 10 years in his seacoast environment, no rust.

I'd go with Renaissance Wax which is PH neutral.

I can't quite believe that any type of wax will provide the same amount of protection as grease (or oil) in the real world. Maybe in a climate controlled safe or a museum. The only thing I have ever used on all of my guns is Breakfree CLP or Collector. We shot USPSA matches during heavy rain storms and I never had any rust on anything. (although I did have a gun full of water when I got it home) Many of the competitors quit and took their safe queens home. I remember one match where it stormed so hard they stopped the match. We had to come back two weeks later to finish it.

Wax will not provide the protection that grease will. I have put wax on metal, not buffed it off and left it out in the weather. It rusted quickly.

I've used Syn wheel bearing on equipment setting outside. It works very well if you get good coverage. If you go the marine grade it repeals water and will serve you well. I have had stuff sitting outside for 3+ yrs. The surface is very grungy from all the dirt on it. When you wipe it off it's looks new under it. So it is doable with a syn marine grade.

Ren wax works great. I use it on guns, knives, certain tools, and the straight razors I use. Never had rust on any, even though the razors are stropped and exposed to water every day, after which they sit in a humid bathroom, in a humid city. Plus, its clean and doesn't leave residue on everything. You can also use it on wood stocks, marble counter tops, all kinds of stuff.

I've been meaning to try this with Ren wax, haven't gotten around to it yet, but I'd bet it would give some really good protection.
