No gun maker recommends shooting reloads there are too many variables. Some makers know that you will anyway. As far as +P .38 Special goes I find it hard to believe that a few rounds will destroy a gun made of modern steel and heat treat. I am sure they offer a few designs like the conversions that would not last very long withal a steady diet of +P. But for their own liability they have to say such things. The company would not last long if their guns were so delicate as to be destroyed by an extra few PSI. Some standard pressure rounds are at the max limit in pressure anyway, some are not.
I wouldn’t make a habit of firing +p ammo in a gun not rated for +p. Why risk permanently damaging a gun that the manufacturer could clearly tell that the incorrect ammo was used upon examination?
On the one hand, I wouldn't shoot heavy loads in a repro C&B conversion, "modern steel" and "stronger than it looks" notwithstanding.
On the other hand, I would not necessarily limit it to underloaded "Cowboy" ammo, either.
