I did not want to hijack the other mag/ mag pouch question with my similar question, so thought I would start a new thread.

The Barney round question got me to thinking here... (plus an article in this month's Front Sight magazine) I have one mag with a Dawson SNL base pad on one of my mags that is just slightly too long to be legal.

For local matches, nobody checks, but this is one mag that would stay in my bag or my car at any sort of major match where they are checking.

My question: "Can I use this borderline mag as my Barney round mag?"

I am guessing the answer is "no", but thought I would ask anyway. I am assuming any mag that I use in any way during a match must pass inspection, even if it is just a Barney round mag.

I wouldn't take the chance...as a CRO at major matches I also would never call a shooter on that, but that's just me.

The correct answer is to take a grinder to the SNL basepad until it fits. That's what I did on mine. Doesn't take a lot. You'll have to buy a gauge though.

I think that the answer is "no," as the course of fire starts with the "make ready," and you'd be using it during the course of fire.

When I finally gauged my mags before a major match, I was alarmed to discover that 3 of 5 did not fit the gauge without a tiny bit of downward pressure. And, since the mags must fit without pressure, that meant I had a problem if I got checked. Rather than grind the pads, I dremeled the very rear of the feed lips. It was scary, but it worked and had no impact on the performance or reliability of the mags. "Shaving" magazines, one way or another, is something most competitors who check mags end up doing!
