Talladega has an airport near the race track. I’ve flown into it numerous times.
However, it’s a general aviation airport 6,000’ long. Suitable for business jets, and turboprops but no commercial air traffic.
Birmingham has commercial traffic, and an Air National Guard detachment., but nothing like Atlanta, the busiest airport in the world...
Though not remote like much of the open west, Talladega is decidedly rural. CMP Talladega is only about 7 miles from the race track (visible from I-20), or airport, but you can’t exactly get to it from there! The mountain you see in the background is in the Talladega National Forrest, approximately 750,000 acres of remote access Appalachian mountain terrain.
It’s beautiful! I grew up in Anniston, Al approximately 35mi northeast of Talladega.
You’ll be amazed at the Talladega CMP facility. It’s a country club for shooters, and shooting!
I’ve shot several matches on the 600yd John C.Garand range, and Range 1. (100yd Bullseye target range). Familiarize yourself by visiting their website. Access to various ranges is limited on scheduled match events. Transport by golf carts by facility personnel is available. I strongly suggest an equipment cart!
Enjoy your stay, but be forewarned that there is limited motel accommodations except in Oxford/Anniston. or close into Birmingham.
Downtown Anniston in 50’s or 60’s was any-town USA. We never locked our doors. Crime was a west side issue. Now however, I won’t go off Quintard Ave after dark. Even passing through is an adventure...
