Just thought I'd share this, since it's been forever since I've posted a good update on the UTRPC (Rifle & Pistol Club). We're the on-campus gun range at UT Austin.

Second Amendment Sisters is coming out to teach a woman-oriented gun safety class in a week. Our club is currently only 20% female, so we're looking to balance out our demographic. All the women who have come to shoot have had a great time, but many say that other women are apprehensive about trying a "guy thing".

Here's the second draft of our flier. We're going to tighten up the writing in the middle, and move to a less distressed font in the lower part. Photo is Oleg's (used with his permission), arrangment done by one of our female shooters who's a freshman in Advertising.

We're pretty stoked about this event. Now, to figure out how many flyers to print out to net us 42 students per class. I'm thinking 300 handouts =42 students, and we can make a email list to contact those turned away for future classes. Our first "Gun Safety" class was 150 handouts = 45 students, so we'll see. Not sure if the cultural taboo will keep female shooters away, or whether breaking that taboo will bring us tons more recruits.

In retrospect, I should probably have gone into the Public Affairs MOS, instead of an all-male Artilery unit. My marketing skills are a work in progress.

Marketing is not my strong suit, though strangely sales is. So, I can't be very helpful in the advice department. I responded only to say thank you and good on ya for what you are doing.

Inviting the SAS to a college campus in "little L.A. Texas" to help dispel some of the F.U.D. surrounding guns that is typically taught to the fairer sex is an OUTSTANDING! approach. I salute you, keep up the good work.

ETA: I really like the flyer too .... it would get me to show up, though I'm not your target audience.

Matthew, looks good. I'd say "by invitation" rather than "on invitation." You are doing some good work. Keep it up, and make sure to train several who will keep on when you become an Ex.

Well done on the layout. The only criticism I would make would be to suggest that you put a bit of a white glow around the "Instructor and coaches..." text to make it pop away from the background a little bit more.

But I'm picking a fairly minor nit.

Nice work Matt. If my wife wasn't pregnant right now, I'd see if she was interested.

I'll ask around to some of our friends. See if any of them are interested.

Contact info in the flier might be a good idea.... :D

Class is for UT students/facult/staff at this time, but if anyone knows UT folks, feel free to send them our way.

We'll cut most of the middle text and change to

FREE for UT students, everything provided

Well done Matthew! Other than the "on invitation" critique, your flier is top notch and should generate quite an interest.

While my heart is in College Station, I applaud your efforts..bravo!

My undergraduate degree is in marketing, but I am hardly a guru. Anyway, the picture doesn't seem to fit the flier. Yes, it's a woman with a gun, but she looks like a bada$$ (for lack of a better term). I think the apprehension some women might feel about guns being a guy thing is embodied by that photo. I think a photo of a woman instructing another woman about firearms, both of them smiling, would better convey the message.

I understand that college clubs don't always have access to such stock photos. The current flier should drum up some traffic for the club. Hopefully as your female membership grows, they can encourage classmates to join as well.

Whatever you do, make sure you have plenty of people snapping digital photos while you are there. Get shots of women shooting, aiming, loading, cleaning their weapons, answering/asking questions, etc. The more photos you have, taken by a variety of cameras and people, the better off you'll be. Use them for fliers, newsletters, e-mail announcements, the club website, everything. If you want a truly lasting female membership, the can't feel like only one day of the year is Girl Gun Day. If possible, try to replace every photo that is all male to show 50/50 male/female. Show manicured fingers wrapped around a rifle stock. Show pink and purple shirts on the firing line. See if you can pitch the idea to some of the sororities on campus, or to any of the girl-only clubs.

Good luck!

"I think a photo of a woman instructing another woman about firearms, both of them smiling, would better convey the message."

Agreed.

"See if you can pitch the idea to some of the sororities on campus"

That... is an EXCELLENT idea.

Someone could interpret the two nights listed as a 2 night class and may not have both nights free. You may want to clarify that it's one night class available either evening. "Sign up for either night."

Really good point there. Any tips on the most concise way to communicate that?

I even considered putting a big "OR" between the times, indicating that they're options, not sequence.

Any other brainstorms on that?

This is about as tricky as when a prof says "I want you to write a paper concisely covering A, B, C, X, Y, and Z, and it all has to fit on one page".

Just put "Two Classes To Choose From" or "Two Nights Only"...."Children Under 5 Are Free!" "Sunday! Sunday! Sunday!"....oh wait, sorry wrong event:D

I have to keep giving you props! It is great to see comunity outreach programs like this, especially on a college campus.

@ Tess: as far as I understand, to shoot at UTRPC events, they have to be current student/faculty/staff for liability reasons.

However, when events are run at the range by USA-Shooting or other organizations, those are open to the shooting community.

If anyone knows any experienced female shooters in Austin who'd like to coach for this class, that'd be much appreciated.

May I suggest something on the flyer? The font used seems a bit aggressive. For an event like this you want to seem as warm and inviting as possible to promote a larger turnout. I would pick something a bit less gothic looking.

Just a thought.

We've thought about that some, but this photo has test-marketed really well.

There are some girls on campus that would come if the flyer had a girl with dreadlocks, piercings, and an AK.

Others would come if we had a girl in an Olympic tracksuit with an air pistol.

This one is decently middle-ground, but edgy enough to get a response.

We're going to do some real heavy advertising, and hope to be turning a few away at the door (and inviting them to come back for any of our regular classes). We're prepared to handle max capacity, so I want to get max capacity.

Will post a final draft later, and will definitely be reporting back Monday after next as to how the class went.

Thanks for posting this Matthew!!!

We are really excited about participating in this endeavor with you and the UT Rifle and Pistol club and look forward to a very successful event. Thank you so much for inviting us to be a part of this outreach to the women of UT.

I also wanted to let you know, one of the readers of this forum has already joined Second Amendment Sisters - that's awesome!

Good deal, should be exciting. We touched up the fonts and clarified that it's the same class offered twice.

I went to Kinkos to order 400 copies. When I came back the whole Kinkos staff was arguing about gun control (majority pro-gun), so I suppose the flyer has some effect. Handed out a few on campus this evening, got some polite "no"s, but also some enthusiastic interest. Left a huge stack at the UT range for members to take back to their dorms, co-ops, etc. Aiming to get at least 42 students for each class, and invite any overflow to come back on any open range day for the standard on-demand classes.

Only (partial) downside: if this class gets anywhere near the attention I'm hoping it will, we're going to be swamped at the range for the next couple weeks. We're overworking the staff already, so I'll be posting a Want Ad on THR and TFL sometime tonight or tomorrow warning, so be watching for that. Take care all,

that would be me

I saw Matthew's posts and yes, indeed, joined Second Amendment Sisters. I am thrilled that they're doing this at UT. (We need an applauding icon along with the other smilies!)

Handed out 100 flyers in the space of an hour today. Got about 60% polite "no"s, a handful of "I don't believe in guns/ I'm a peaceful person", and a good number of "whoa! A gun class! That's sooooo cool!"

We've had phonecalls from Jane magazine and FOX News, so we'll see how this all shakes out.

Just thought I'd provide a quick update. The Women & Guns class was a huge success. Very happy with results. Props to the Second Amendment Sisters for doing a great job. I'm sure MatthewVanitas will fill you guys in some more.

I have a ton of things going on for a while. Grad school deadlines approaching. I've put up a template of the new website, if anyone wants to send over info/pictures/suggestions and what not, drop a pm. (Also, if you want the link to the template, drop a pm)

My only suggestion would be to use a firearm in the photo that was less intimidating in size and appearance. A simple .22 single shot would be perfect. Not sure how the ladies would react, as I am continually purplexed like most men, but the large shottie jumped off the page to me. Just a thought.
