There is a meeting at the capitol tomorrow to discuss the UofU ban. I'm going to try to make it, but I may have a job interview, and if that happens I won't be able to. For those of you who can though, lets slap down the U. :)

Here are the details from the USSC, I'm just passing this along:

CORRECTED USSC URGENT ACTION ALERT February 5, 2004
FOR ALL UTAH SHOOTING SPORTS COUNCIL MEMBERS & SUPPORTERS

DISREGARD EARLIER ALERT- IT ATTACHED 2003 INFO. CORRECT INFORMATION
FOLLOWS...( WE APOLOGIZE FOR THE ERROR AND WILL FLOG THE ALERT WRITER)
---URGENT ACTION REQUIRED- Pass SB 48 "Uniform Firearm Laws"
    ---Legislative Session update
    ---USSC Website

URGENT ACTION REQUIRED - HELP STOP THE UNIVERSITY'S BAN ON LEGAL SELF
    DEFENSE!
SUPPORT SB 48 "Uniform Firearm Laws" AT HEARING FRIDAY AT 2:00 PM
    Text of bill: http://www.le.state.ut.us/~2004/bills/sbillint/sb0048.htm
This is a necessary bill and must be passed to stop the protracted
lawsuits that activist anti-gun judges may decide against us!
The University is telling all their faculty to contact committee
members, so your calls, faxes and email are especially important.
IF YOU KNOW SOMEONE WHO HAS BEEN VICTIM OF A SERIOUS CRIME OR THREAT ON
CAMPUS- PLEASE CONTACT US SO WE CAN PROVIDE EXAMPLES TO THE COMMITTEE.

THREE ACTION STEPS YOU NEED TO DO IMMEDIATELY:
    1. Phone, FAX or email the Committee members below. They are busy,
and don't need a long discussion, just a brief comment "Please vote FOR
SB 48 "Uniform Firearm Laws" and one or two of the reasons in the
suggested email below. Be polite. Phone calls are best, FAX is good, and
emails least effective, but they all count. Do all three if you can, to
as many members as you can.

    2. Make a special effort to attend the meeting at 2:00 PM Friday
February 6th in room 414 at the Capitol. You won't need to testify or
anything, Just nod your heads at the appropriate times, and raise your hands
when they ask who wants to testify FOR the bill. Be polite, and dress
appropriately- coat and tie or business casual. A lot of University
    faculty will be there too.
    3. Pass this alert to all your friends interested in gun rights. Tell
them to visit the USSC website (address below) and sign up to get a
    copy directly.

Suggested Email: (cut and paste into your email form)
    *****************
Subject: VOTE FOR SB 48 (Uniform Firearm Laws)
Dear Senator- Please vote for Senator Waddoups' SB 48 because:
    (1) The University of Utah is not a separate kingdom, and is subject to
the laws and funding of the Legislature.
    (2) A policy that provides defenseless victims is wrong! Serious
crimes do occur on campus, like the murder at Weber State, and many rapes
and assaults. Mass murderer Ted Bundy was a student at the U of U.
Criminals ignore the University's gun ban.
    (3) Uniform laws allowing legal self defense are essential throughout
the sate, not different rules for every municipality or state entity.
    (4) Hysterical scare stories about permit holders being a danger to
others or stifling academic freedom lack any factual foundation. If
anything, students are intimidated by faculty pushing extremist liberal
    views.
Please vote for Senator Waddoups' SB 68.
    Thank you.

    LEGISLATIVE SESSION UPDATE
The first three weeks are nearly over, but three more remain.
Besides the urgent action above, be prepared to act on short notice to
    defeat two bad anti-gun bills:
*** HB 342 (Daniels) Gun Show Background checks- yet another attempt to
get their foot in the door for a de facto registration system for all
firearms transfers. Studies prove that less than 1% of criminals (0.6%
or 0.7% in 1991 and 1997) get guns from gun shows. This is not about
crime, it is about pushing the gun ban agenda.
*** SB 227 (Hale) Concealed Firearms Amendments- probably another
attempt to ban legal self defense weapons in schools and churches.
We need to work hard to get three good bills passed:
*** SB 48 (Waddoups Uniform Firearm Laws) discussed above to ensure
that legal self defense is not outlawed by idiotic policy that makes
University of Utah a defenseless victim zone attractive to thugs and
    terrorists.
*** HB 294 (Ferrin) Firearms Purchase Amendments- minor technical
changes to fix discrepancies between federal and state details.
*** HB295 (Ferrin) Concealed Firearm Permits Amendments- technical
changes to eliminate wasted effort sending stuff that BCI does not need.

OH YES. I sure hope they swat that BS policy down and bury it.

The U of U policy is the keystone -- if it falls, the congruent policies at other places (like USU :cuss: ) will tumble to the ground.

That's a lot of emails to send, but I can do it.

Thanks for the heads up. If it weren't for you, I wouldn't even know about any of this. ;)

Wes, I would recommend that you sign up at the USSC for e-mail alerts. They aren't the most reliable, nor do I always agree with them, but they do a pretty decent job of giving notices.

Also if possible, call your legislators. You would be surprised how "normal" many of them are. :) Most of them are just average people. Keep in mind that most of the districts in Utah cover relatively small areas of population, so our opinions do actually matter to many of them.

Yeah, we don't get along with him very well. Maybe you can find a place for him in Florida (Ol' Sparky? ).

Correia, that's true, many of the legislators are level-headed people. Most of ours (in Utah) are actually pretty darned well informed, too.

I just got an email back from Mike Dmitrich saying that he is supporting the bill. :)

    It passed the committee. :)

It was a good smack down of the U. The bill will now be heading to the floor for debate and discussion, so keep up on your legislators.

The report that I heard said that the U got whooped in the committee meeting. Lots of gun rights people showed up to testify, including a former SLC cop turned U student who knows what kind of crap goes on in the shadows, professors who have received death threats but aren't allowed to carry, rape victims, and a U janitor who works late at night all alone in big buildings.

Plus one of the senators said something to the effect of: "The capitol is a public place where people can carry guns, it hasn't hurt our heated debate at all, so your argument about protecting academic freedom is wrong." :)

    This is a good one.
