Picked this up last Friday. Savage 99 made at their Utica plant. The barrel screws out easy enough. Maybe some locktight would help. It’s been refinished. It’s in 250-3000. Seems to be a 1920’s model.

I had a pre-war (1927'ish) Savage 99 takedown in .30-30... the barrel threaded up easy and bottomed out right at 12 O'Clock, I think that's kind of the idea. The key in the forearm is supposed to hold it in lockup... so the condition of the key is critical. Like yours, mine had been refinished... but at least they did a nice job. Mine also had what I believe to be custom wood on it... it was pretty, but they put this huge beavertail forearm on it, I would have preferred that svelte Schnabel on it... but it's gone now, anyway.

Very cool. This cartridge is the one that gave me the quarterbore bug. 1:14 twist in the 99 isn’t it?

Nice! Thats one rifle I never got. Never found the right deal and now they are more than I'd spend. The old Savage factory is just about gone. Seems funny driving past there. I think I mentioned there was a business I serviced there when it was Charles Town outlet mall decades ago. Enjoy it.

I know Utica well. Yes I have driven by the old factory many times myself. Live closer to Syracuse now. I had to have a Utica made one. Almost that has posted knows more about the rifle than me. My dad gave me a Savage book last night. After my class I am giving this week and I get on my next trip to VA I will study up after hours.
