Greetings,
Many of you have been following the posts that MacPelto and I have made about the UT Rifle & Pistol Club. This is a Registered Student Organization at UT, and we are authorized to use the on-campus NROTC Shooting Range (right next to the Gregory Gym, down the street from the main library).
Up until recently, the range got about two kids a night, mostly ROTC. Since MacPelto and I began recruiting, we've swelled to 20-30 kids per night. We have a good number of regulars who are forming a competitive team, and get 6-12 total newbies on the average evening.
However, our current Range Staff is not sufficient to maintain these capacity crowds for the long haul. We have four main RSOs and three Assistant RSOs, and we're getting worn pretty ragged. We'd like to add at least one Assistant RSO per night.
If you live in the Austin area, have a firm grasp of basic gun safety and technique, and can coach at the UT range from 6:30PM-9PM twice a month (or ideally four times a month), we could really, really use your help. Our current staff is mainly retirees and student veterans, but we're pretty open to anyone who can be a good ambassador for the shooting community.
Please send me a PM if interested.
MENTORS: If coaching is too large of a committment for you, don't fret, you can also help out as a Mentor. If you compete in any Austin-area matches on a quasi-regular basis, and wouldn't mind having a college kid tag along, drop us a line. We'll take your info, and physically post it at the range (not online, just papercopy).
Example: "Pistol Silhouette: Bob Q. Smith (512) 555-5555 [email protected] -- Saturday matches, bring $4 for entry fee, ammo on me"
No obligation, you can turn down or accept any request you get from our members. Our Mentor Coordinator is fellow THR member UTSwabbie. Please PM him if you are interested in becoming a Mentor.
We're accomplishing great things at the UTRPC. Our current tally is 70 club members, and we've had about 200 individual visitors in the past seven weeks. Where else do you have the chance to directly help young people learn safe shooting? Two hours a week (or every other week): the time it takes to watch one silly Hollywood film...
Now is an especially important time, as we expect full capacity crowds (20-30 per night) for the next several weeks, due to the large and attention-getting courses that 2nd Amendment Sister will be teaching this coming weekend.
Thanks for any support you can provide,
