Yesterday, after a loooong night of working, I went to a new gunstore in SE Oklahoma City (Gun World) and had a rather good day (aside from the usual incessant prodding from salespeople to buy things). I got to check out an H & K PSG-1, having never seen one before, much less hold one. Didn't have the $24,000.00 for it, though. Anyhow, it's good to dream...

But then I saw it: the UZi.

Rather, the seven they had on display; all told, there were about four post-'86 semi Model Bs and two or three Minis. Also there was Steyr's civilian version of their TMP, but sans foregrip and including one 15-rd mag for a bit over $1,000.00. Now, I've got a thing for "evil" guns and needless to say, I think I chipped a tooth when my jaw hit the ground.

:D

One of the Uzi's caught my eye, and I reeeeally wanna get it... but I've got a coupla questions about 'em:

1) How's $2150.00 for a Model B (16" protuberance of a barrel, but still has the folding stock) and a 30-rd mag?

2) What's the reliability/ ease of disassembly & cleaning/ maintenance level of these things?

3) Do they qualify as handguns or rifles? I'm asking this becase I've always seen them used (albeit in movies) as pistols, and seem more geared towards being a handgun-type-thing.

4) How difficult to find/ expensive are the mags?

Any opinions from anyone and everyone who owns one or has fired one are greatly appreciated!

The Uzi carbines are nice little guns, IMO. Mine has been 100% reliable and they can be disassembled in under a minute. The only thing I don't like is the grip safety, which can cause a sore hand if you shoot a long session.

They are considered rifles, which is why it has the 16" barrel. You can register it as a SBR and put a short barrel on it. Magazines are fairly cheap and plentiful. There are thousands of used one imported from Israel.

I don't know if I'd pay that much for the semi-Uzi (of course, I bought mine back when they were $350). You can get a full-auto one for somewhere around $3,000-$4,000. That would be my preference.

Meh... I'm low on funds as it is, and a full-auto wouldn't help that much :)

After looking around on GunBroker and such at the same thing, Gun World's price (about twice as much as private sellers) is WAY off. Their Steyr SPP was a bit closer to reasonable, but was still about $400.00 over MSRP. And even though the SPP is about 13" long, it still classifies as a handgun and I'm still just 19. :fire:

Guess I'll have to look elsewhere...:banghead:

$2150 for a IMI Model B is WAY too much. Check Gunbroker, GunsAmerica, and Auction Arms for more reasonable prices.

I have a post-ban IMI Model 45 that I bought from Vector http://www.vectorarms.com (check out the accessories page too) and I LOVE it. The lack of a folding stock makes no difference to me and I like the IMI fixed polymer stock a lot. $795+18 shipping, AND it comes with a warranty...something you won't get with a ModB. I've only had time to shoot it at my local indoor range and it shoots one ragged hole at 75 feet. Hoping to get to the outdoor range fairly soon to shoot at longer distance.

Uzi mags are pretty cheap, ranging from $10 to $35 depending on capacity and manufacturer. I have South African contract Lyttleton 25 rounders and Norinco 32 rounders and all work flawlessly.

Cleaning and maintenance couldn't be much more simple. the top cover comes off and everything lifts out.

Uzi carbines are rifles.

Buy the Bushmaster barrel shroud to hide the skinny barrel. It's not as glossy as it looks here.

Great sub-guns, not much as semi-auto carbines. With that kind of bucks involved, I would seriously consider the sub-gun, if legal in your state.

That shop definitely sounds like gougers. I don't go to cheats like that.

Way too much. If NIB should run around $1,500.

2) What's the reliability/ ease of disassembly & cleaning/ maintenance level of these things?

From my experience with a Vectors Full Auto Uzi.

Reliability: Goes bang every time. I have yet to experience a jam related to the firearm after 30,000 rounds.
Ease of disassembly: Takes me about 2 minutes to remove top cover, bolt, barrel, and pistol grip from receiver.
Cleaning: Takes about 4 minutes to completely clean firearm with Power blast.
Maintenance: Gun does not need much maintenance, in a matter of fact needs very little lubrication to function.

3) Do they qualify as handguns or rifles? I'm asking this becase I've always seen them used (albeit in movies) as pistols, and seem more geared towards being a handgun-type-thing.

UZI Model B would be classified as a rifle, hence the 16 in. barrel.

4) How difficult to find/ expensive are the mags?

Way too easy. As low as $12.95 ea. per 25 rd. mag.

Any opinions from anyone and everyone who owns one or has fired one are greatly appreciated!

Cool gun.
