VA approoves guns in unlocked compartments

From VCDL. Eff. July 1, 2010


The House and Senate both just adopted Governor McDonnell's change to
HB 885, so that starting July 1 a non-CHP holder can have a loaded
handgun in an UNLOCKED compartment or container in a private motor
vehicle or vessel!!!

Three Senators - Marsden, Saslaw, and Marsh - spoke against the
change, wanting to require the compartment or container be locked,
while Senator Vogel spoke in favor of the change.

The vote was 20 to 19 in the Senate, a squeaker, but we won!

Also, the Governor's changes to HB 1217, which makes only NRA gun
safety curriculum something that elementary schools can use to teach
gun safety, passed by a large margin.

So you are saying, if I bought a pistol from a private dealer(not 21) I could keep MY handgun in my vehicle LOADED, in a non container? so I could keep it under a seat? or my glove box? also Can I keep a long rifle or shotgun in my car? I heard it needs to be UNLOADED?

I never addressed the issue of a private sale. I don't see how you could draw that conclusion from a post that never addressed private sales.. Unless you have a CCW, putting a weapon under a seat is concealment, under any interpretation of the law, current or the new version. If you do, it is a felony.Under a seat is not a container under any interpretation IMO. I never said non container. where did you get this interpretation of my post?

The new law does not address long guns at all AFAIK After July, loaded in a glovebox-ok, under the seat=no-illegal without a CCW, as it is currently and after July 1

I offered nothing more than the specifics of the law as passed. no private sale or long gun regulations were mentioned in my post

Under a seat is NOT a container IMO. A box or glove compartment unlocked after July 1. Under a seat will get you a felony concealment charge w/o a CCP.
