I'm looking for recommendations for good gun shops in the western part of VA (Lynchburg and west of there), particularly the Roanoke area.

Any opinions/replies/suggestions much appreciated.

Gunstores around Roanoke

Trader Jerry's II in Salem is your best bet. He has the best prices in Roanoke on guns (decent selection as well).
Roanoke firearms is outrageously overpriced.
Bryansteens is moderately overpriced.
Shooterswarehouse in Daleville is somewhat overpriced.

Thanks for the recommendations, atblis.

Firearms Emporium has been on my site for almost a year, and for free. Now that I've talked to him about paying the whopping $10 a month, he's waffling.

And I've already referred paying customers to him.

This is how I work: I offer a shop owner six months on my site for free. After that, if they don't think it's worth it, that's fine. If they need a bit of time to think about it, that's fine, too.

If they make me call them back six, eight or even a dozen times like some shops, then I go looking for their competitors, get the competitors on my site, and zap the guys who've wasted my time right off the site.

Firearms Emporium is taxing my patience. Strange, since I've steered so many potential new customers their way.

For those so bored as to wonder how the site is doing, today was a banner day. I called a shop in the middle of corn country in Indiana to see if he had a Glock 20 C in stock.

He didn't, but thought he could get one.

Meanwhile, I asked him---as I do every shop owner I talk to---if he had a SA M6 Scout carbine in stock, or a SA Ultra Compact V-10 stainless, or any number of other hard-to-find guns that people are always emailing me about.

Well, he had two M6's. And I had him three customers within an hour, and all three wanted to buy both.

On top of that, he'd already gotten several calls off my site, and some new paying customers. And he's in the middle of Absolutely Nowhere.

Forgive me for venting, but I'm finding shops that understand that even $10 a month is worth it. And I'm finding shops--even some of the largest in the country--who question that amount.

Ah, well. So goes business.

I was in that area on business a few weeks ago.

If you're in Roanoke, get on Hershberger Dr., drive past the hotels (Wyndham, Clarion, Marriot), drive past the Hardee's. A few hundred yards past the Hardee's the road will fork. At the fork there is this pawn shop/gun store. I don't remember the name of the shop.

The pawn shop is seperate from the gun shop. I was impressed with the selection. They have a lot of stuff crammed into a small area. They had about 40 1911's when I was there. They had AR-15's and AK-47 copies. They have a good variety of stuff, and the guys behind the counter were very friendly. I don't remember if their prices were any good, I just bought a holster and some ammo for my .38, that stuff was priced middle of the road.

There is another gun store if you go right at the fork in the road and follow it out past the food lion, there will be a Sheetz gas station on your right. At that light go right and there is a gun store up on the left no more than a mile or 2 up the road. A gray building.

Hey, guess what? You just explained how to get to Roanoke Firearms. And by the way, I will pit my prices against any gunshop in Roanoke. What a crock to say we are outrageously over-priced. We have the best, most highly-trained personnel, combined with very favorable prices. I challenge you to be specific about prices.

Up I-81 in Augusta County is one of my favorite shops:

DOMINION OUTDOORS
2857 STUARTS DRAFT HWY (Route 340 in the Broadmoor Plaza)
STUARTS DRAFT , VA 24477
(540) 337-9218

They're the other Caesar Guerini shotgun dealer in VA along with Dance's in Colonial Heights (BTW, check your map, it's really just north of Petersburg). Dominion is also a Beretta dealer, does a lot of web business and seems to know somebody at Colt - I bought my WWI repro from them. And they are growing so fast they're planning on building a store at the I-64 Fishersville exit (there's a sign on the lot so far.)

John, in Richmond, but born in Roanoke while my dad was a State Trooper.

P.S. - There's a smaller shop in Staunton that does a good business.

Nuckols Gun Works
1801 W Beverly St Staunton, VA 24401
(540) 886-3061

Thanks again for the suggestions.

Dance's has been on my site since last summer. When I called them to renew, there was no question about whether or not it was worth it. I like those people.

Dominion, when I called them last summer, just weren't sure about being on a website for free. According to my notes, they told me to call them back some other time. At least seven times. Probably more, since there's so many scribbled margin notes on my VA sheet.

Dance's has had over 1,000 visitors--people who probably didn't even know about them--view their page on my site in the last few weeks.

Dominion? They're not getting the new customers that Dance's and other VA shops are. At least not from my site.

Maybe Dominion is just too busy growing. No kidding, they've gone from one small storefront, to a larger storefront, to doubling their space by adding the space next door and now they're making plans to build a store. I'll mention your site to them next Friday and see what they say (they're a really friendly, talkative bunch.)

They're pulling business from W.Va and Richmond and all over from what I've seen (my parents live around the corner, so we're in there regularly.) Friday before last I was told that a couple came in to buy her a Guerini shotgun - and ended up buying one for each of them. If I'm not careful I'll be in there dropping five or six grand at a time, too. They're just too blooming friendly, "Here, look at this. Look at this. And this..." :)

Gunshops in VA

"I will pit my prices against any gunshop in Roanoke" and you'd probably win (the highest prices award. Well maybe a tie with Bryansteens).

I'll admit that you have a decent store with some nice guns. I've just found that I can usually do a lot better on price at other stores (Trader Jerry's II).

Here is something that comes to mind (not currently but in the past). Both stores had these guns in stock at the same time.

CZ40P
Roanoke Firearms $450
Trader Jerry's II $319
I've also seen them as low as $299

You also had a used CZ75B for $495 which is laughable.

I go to most gun stores about once a week, and as a result I feel confident making assertions about prices.

I realize this is an older Thread , but it still came in handy for me before I made my Glock 23 purchase last week.

After reviewing several sites online , Trader Jerry's II in Salem had a price BETTER than online prices at base level ... That's before the online shipping and Retailer Receiving fee.

they also had the biggest table and display at the Salem Gun show 2 weeks ago and if I recall correclty they are going to have a 150 item table at the Roanoke show soon.

The owners are great people and very helpful. I just wish they had a store in Roanoke as my work places me a good distance from them and hard to get by there during the week.

I saw Jerry's at a gun show a couple weeks ago here in Sotuheastern VA. His selection is great. I've seen better prices on some things, but he had some good stuff for good prices.

Yeah, I've noticed that their prices have crept up a bit. It used to be that they were always the cheapest (with Dark Sun being the only ones who beat them on stuff).

Yes, the shops pay for their full-page ads. They get a free six-month trial period to evaluate whether the site is bringing them new business. At the end of that period, should they decide to continue (which 75% do), the cost is $60 for six months or $100 a year.

The site is now drawing 350,000 to over 500,000 visitors a month. Most shops on the site get 1,000 to 1,500 people a month viewing their ads, which puts their cost at under a penny per view. Anyone who's ever been involved in pay-per-click advertising knows that you can't get that kind of rate anywhere. Heck, even an 8 1/2" x 11" flyer costs over two cents.

I need to get more VA shops on my site, as a large number of people are searching for shops in VA. Thanks for mentioning some names; I'll give them a call.

Trader Jerrys always has a large selection at the gun show in Chantilly. I bought an XD package a while back, a good deal at the time. I'm sure they still have good prices.

Jerry has always price matched at the chantilly show for me as well :)

he even took 20 bucks off of one gun I got from him which allowed me to get a set of hogue grips for it while at the show

Trader Jerry's is a good shop, got my CZ from him.
If you get a chance check out Whitetail Outfitters. On Rt. 8 not far outside Christiansburg. They can set you up for just about anything you need.
Rifle, pistol, shotgun, archery, ammo and now carry (ever increasing) supply of reloading supplies.
They do get busy but that's testament to good business.

While we're at it, has anyone been to Guns and Ammo Warehouse in Manassas lately? The past few times I've been in there the shelves seemed really bare and few customers. They have almost no handguns any more and their used gun selection is really weak. When the store opened a few years ago they had a decent selection but the place appears to be barely hanging on now.
